Lucy Davis didn’t have to think twice about setting up a lemonade stand to raise money for cancer research.

“She loves having lemonade stands,” said Lucy’s mother Bridie Tobolski. “She'll come home from school and set up a little make shift stand.”

When Bridie read about Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a non-profit in honor of Alexandra Scott who died at age 8 due to cancer, it was a natural fit for Lucy. The 7-year-old who attends school at Queen of Martyrs in Evergreen Park prefers to donate her old toys to Palos Hills Sandbox, where she went for pre-school, rather than selling them at a garage sale.

“They really instill that in them at Sandbox, and Lucy’s a giver,” Tobolski said.

“I like helping kids,” Lucy said, while standing Friday afternoon at her bright yellow lemonade stand, with the Alex’s Lemonade Stand logo on the front.

Lucy’s passion sparked interest among her classmates and the community. Ten other classmates will be on hand Saturday to help run the lemonade stand from noon until 5 p.m. Zacarelli’s Pizza donated a pizza dinner for the participants, and DeJay’s Ace Hardware offered paint for the stand.

Alex Scott regularly held lemonade stands of her own to raise money for cancer research. Before she died, Scott and her family raised over $1 million and the foundation continues the mission. Lucy’s stand is one of thousands across the country that will be raising money throughout the weekend, following Scott’s lead.

As of Friday afternoon, Lucy raised $260 online and other $140 in donations from her parents’ co-workers. Lucy’s new goal is to raise $1,000 by the end of Saturday.

“I couldn’t be any prouder of her,” Tobolski said.
