In the Stagg boys basketball program, the path to victory often goes through the back door. The Chargers are winning with a combination of hard work, good shooting and old-school basketball sets.
With the game on the line in the fourth quarter, the Stagg boys basketball team made old-fashioned basketball look new and hip in a 52-44 victory over Lincoln-Way North on Friday night in Palos Hills. Stagg scored layups off backdoor cuts twice in a row during an 11-0 blitzkrieg. The Chargers snapped a 41-41 deadlock and pulled away from Lincoln-Way North, exploiting holes in the Phoenix’s over-aggressive defense to turn the trick. Max Strus, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, took a feed from Mike Scatena to start the scoring run for Stagg. Then, Ryan Dahleen hooked up with Brett Kaiser on another backdoor cut that produced another layup. “When you look at our league, a lot of teams are built around defensive pressure,” Stagg coach John Daniels said…

Stagg 52, Lincoln-Way North 44: Sophomore guard Max Strus scored a layup off a backdoor cut to trigger an 11-0 fourth-quarter run for the Chargers in Southwest Suburban Red boys basketball Friday night in Palos Hills.
The Skinny: One of the smallest players on the floor scored one of the biggest baskets in Stagg’s 52-44 boys basketball victory over Lincoln-Way North in Southwest Suburban Red Conference play on Friday night in Palos Hills. Max Strus, a 5-foot-11 sophomore guard, took a pass from Mike Scatena and converted a layup off a backdoor cut. Strus’ basket snapped a 41-41 deadlock at the 3:06 mark of the fourth quarter and triggered an 11-0 scoring run for the Chargers. His older—and much taller—brother Marty was in the stands to witness the feat. Marty Strus is a 6-10 senior center at Lewis University. Patch’s MVP: Max Strus, 5-11, sophomore guard, Stagg. He scored one basket—but what a big one it was—on a backdoor cut to snap a 41-41 deadlock in…

Yes, Stagg's Sean Dwyer speaks the language of a three-point shooter. He also speaks the language of a Patch Athlete of the Week winner.
Stagg's Sean Dwyer outpolled five others in balloting for Patch Athlete of the Week honors. He is now eligible for November Patch Athlete of the Month recognition. The nominees for Southland Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 20-26, were: Jawad Adekoya, senior, center/forward, boys basketball, Andrew. Adekoya struck a note for big brothers everywhere with his 27-point, five-rebound effort in the Thunderbolts’ 63-52 victory over Crete-Monee. He outscored his “little” brother, 6-4 Jubril Adekoya, by two points and served notice the T-Bolts have a powerful 1-2 punch on the front line. Sean Dwyer, junior, guard/forward, boys basketball, Stagg. Dwyer showed he has the range to shoot holes in almost any defense in the Chargers’ 54-32 victory over …

Stagg 55, Thornridge 46. Darius Draper scores 23 points as Chargers survive on road in overtime.
The Hot Read: Sean Dwyer scored his only basket with less than 10 seconds left in regulation to force a 44-44 tie, and Stagg went out to defeat Thornridge 55-46 in a boys basketball overtime thriller on Friday night. Dwyer's basket gave the Chargers the momentum they needed to mount an 11-2 finishing kick. And Darius Draper's efforts on both sides of the ball certainly didn't hurt. Patch’s MVP: Stagg's Darius Draper scored 23 points, including nine in overtime, to lead all scores. He also pulled down 10 rebounds. He added two steals and blocked one shot. Key Stats: Stagg's defensive discipline kept the Thornridge shooters off the free throw line most of the night. The Falcons were 2-for-4 from line. By contrast, the Chargers hit 15-of-24…

Stagg 62, Lemont 50. Indians can't stop the Chargers ability to drive to the basket and also hit the three-pointer.
The Hot Read: Lemont led 23-20 midway through the second quarter, but Stagg outscored the Indians 16-4 over the final 4:21 of the first half to take a 36-27 lead at halftime. The Chargers wouldn't allow the Indians to get any closer than 50-45 with 7:07 left and they went on to notch a 62-50 boys basketball victory on Tuesday night. Stagg had a balanced scoring attack with three players in double figures. Sophomore Sean Dwyer added nine points off the bench. Patch's MVP: The Chargers rely on Darius Draper and Dan Ahern for so much, so receiving 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds from junior Brett Kaiser provided Stagg with a huge boost. Key Stats: Stagg committed only five turnovers in comparison to Lemont's 10. Both teams finished …

Seniors Dan Ahern and Darius Draper have led less experienced varsity players as the Chargers have won eight of their last nine games.
After early-season struggles closing out games, the Stagg boys basketball team has turned the tables as of late. The Chargers (17-5, 8-3) defeated fifth-ranked Thornton 58-53 in another thriller on Friday night. Since the Chargers fell short agaisnt Thornton in their last meeting 51-42, Stagg has won eight of nine games. The victory in the rematch pulled the Chargers within two games of the Wildcats in the Southwest Suburban Red. Stagg coach John Daniels said much of the Chargers' recent success can be traced to the play of two senior standouts, Darius Draper and Dan Ahern. “We’ve passed through 12 players in the last four years,” Daniels said. “Those who graduated had a hand in developing Draper and Ahern. That’s what we do in this …

Chargers use a 24-3 scoring run to throttle the Warriors and overcome a four-day layoff.
The Blizzard of 2011 did not slow down the Stagg boys basketball team. The Chargers (14-6 overall and 5-4 in the Southwest Suburban Red) overcame an early 7-0 in a 72-51 victory over Lincoln-Way West on Friday night. Stagg countered the Warriors' 7-0 run with an 11-0 run of its own and took an 11-7 lead. Lincoln-Way West (5-17, 2-6) stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer by T.J. Dikos to make it 11-10. But the Chargers quickly countered with another run, this time of 13-0 to take a 24-10 lead midway through the second quarter that would prove to be too much for the Warriors to overcome. The first-half Stagg runs were made possible by an impressive performance by 6-5 sophomore Sean Dwyer. He came off the bench and scored 19 of his game-high …

Stagg 71, Lincoln-Way West 52. Sean Dwyer comes off the bench to spark the Chargers in Southwest Suburban Red.
The Hot Read: Stagg defeated Lincoln Way West 71-52 on Friday despite not practicing in four days due to the Blizzard of 2011. The Chargers used a great overall game from senior Darius Draper to go along with future standout in waiting sophomore Sean Dwyer's big offensive output (21 points, 8 rebounds) to offset a cold-shooting night from the field. Patch’s MVP: Stagg’s Darius Draper with 19 points, four rebounds, five assists and only one turnover in 30 minutes of action. Stagg Leaders: Sean Dwyer (21 points), Darius Draper (19 points), Brett Kaiser (13 points), Dan Ahern (8 points). Lincoln-Way West Leaders: Mike Marotta (14 points), and Robert Hubbard (12 points). Quotable I: Stagg coach John Daniels: “We moved the ball really well …
