Solemn Veterans Ceremony Recalls Key Figure who Passed Away

Palos Heights held its Veterans Day ceremony Monday.

The tradition of honoring Palos Heights veterans carried on Monday but did so without one perennial beacon. Don Dahl, who passed away in September, was a driving organizer before the city's Memorial Day and Veterans Day celebration. A veteran from World War II, Dahl was active the local VFW and American Legion and is remembered the by community for his advocating of veterans. Kathy Lovitt of Palos Heights spoke at the ceremony Monday morning outside City Hall about the loss, Dahl, and the emptiness from not seeing him help put together the Veterans Day ceremony. "Don organized the Memorial and Veteran's Day ceremonies for, I don't know how many years," Lovitt said. Lovitt first got to know him ten years ago when she asked to read a poem in…

Stagg Students Send Care Packages to Troops Overseas

Students at Stagg High School organized a supply drive to send care packages to troops overseas.

Boxes lined the table, shipping labels were at the ready and students were hard at work Friday afternoon at Stagg High School.  Several students groups banded together to gather donations and send care packages to troops stationed overseas. The project was started seven years ago by two students, Melissa Gabel and her sister Emily, who had a relative stationed overseas. Gabel is now a special education teacher at Stagg and has continued the tradition with her own students. "We felt the need to show all of the men and women in the armed forces our support," Gabel said. For the past several weeks students have collected toiletries, books and snacks as well as monetary donations to help pay for shipping. Gabel says the project is just one …

Video: Palos South Pays Tribute to Veterans

Palos South took time out to honor local veterans.

At Palos South Middle School on Thursday history books were set aside to reflect on those whose sacrifices made history.  The school's Veterans Day ceremony welcomed veterans, many of whom were relatives of students, into the gym for a moment of honor.  "It was important to bring the community into the school," said principal Chris Bingen.  The ceremony featured music from the school's band and choir. Two students who won an essay contest read their work. Seventh grader Kelly Roach's essay spoke of the important role veterans played in guaranteeing many of our freedoms.  "I feel that we should think of our soldiers as people beyond heroes," she read.  Don Dahl of the Palos Heights veterans commission remarked that for many veterans their …

Important Facts About Veterans Day Part I

From the number of total veterans, to a brief history of the holiday itself, the U.S Census Bureau provides a data-driven look at Veterans Day.

With Veterans Day approaching, the U.S. Census Bureau compiled a slew of facts and information about the holiday, beginning with how the day was established. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation. A national ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
