A man robbed a Palos Hills bank Friday afternoon and is believed to have fled the scene in a checkered taxi cab.

A Palos Hills lieutenant, sergeant and officer credited with capturing a man who authorities say escaped from a Chicago high-rise prison were recognized for their efforts Thursday. Lt. Warren Becker, Sgt. Robert Mankowske and Officer Kevin Price each received medals and plaques before a Palos Hill City Council meeting. The three veteran officers were responsible for arresting Kenneth Conley on Jan. 4. Conley had been on the lam after he and Joseph “Jose” Banks had climbed out of a window of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in December using a rope made of bed sheets, according to authorities. A Cook County judge refused to raise the bond for a man who reportedly threatened police and referenced the Newton, Conn. school shooting just days after the massacre. Judge Patrick T. Rogers did impose special conditions of 31-year-old Matthew Lynch's I-bond — which didn't require Lynch to post anything to get out of jail — during a hearing on Tuesday. Rogers said Lynch must surrender any firearms, his FOID card and his passport. Lynch must also stay with his sister for the duration of the case and there may not be any firearms allowed in her home either, Rogers ruled. Palos Hills' police chief says heroin is entering the southwest suburbs at an 'alarming rate.'
Police have announced another arrest in what officials say is an ongoing investigation into the increased heroin use and number of overdoses in Palos Hills. Deividas Vizgaitis, 20, of Palos Park, was found with 12 individually wrapped packets of heroin during a traffic stop on Dec. 19, police said. He is charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of cannabis. Palos area schools will remain under a soft lockdown for the rest of the week.
Police are continuing to investigate a Palos Hills man who allegedly threatened to harm children and referenced the Newtown, CT, elementary school shooting while drunk. Michael L. Lynch, 31, was hospitalized after his arrest on Monday. He is charged with driving under the influence and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors. Police notified Palos Hills schools of the alleged threats. Area schools were already on soft lockdown as police search for two bank robbers who broke out of a Chicago jail and had reportedly traveled to Tinley Park. A Worth mother is facing drug charges after she reportedly dropped a purse full of hypodermic needles and heroin while at the Palos Hills Pizza Hut. Christina Zila, 36, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug equipment and two counts of endangering the life of a child, Palos Hills police said. Officers were called at about 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 to the Pizza Hut at 11101 Southwest Highway, where they found Zila inside the restaurant. Employees reportedly told police they were concerned for her children because of how she was acting. When approached, Zila asked to talk with officers at the Palos Hills Police Department instead of inside the restaurant. As they were leaving, Zila reportedly dropped her purse. …

THURSDAY, NOV. 8 Vita Loginaite, 23, of Palos Heights, is charged with possession of cannabis, according to a Palos Hills police report. Bridgeview police called at about 11:30 p.m. to tell Palos Hills officers about a hit and run crash. Palos Hills police found the vehicle reportedly involved in the accident in the 10500 block of 81st Avenue. An officer allegedly spotted an open bottle of alcohol in the front seat and a passenger, Loginaite, trying to hide in the passenger area, according to the report. When she was asked for an ID, the officer allegedly saw a white plastic bag with a green leafy substance inside, which tested positive for cannabis. Loginaite is due in Bridgeview court on Dec. 21. A 21-year-old Hickory Hills man faces multiple charges, including attempting to elude police, after ditching his motorcycle and running away from officers, police said. Aleksander Mroczka is charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, fleeing and attempting to elude police, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, reckless driving and several other traffic violations.
