Lunch Rush Greets Wendy's on Opening Day

The new fast-food restaurant features a contemporary interior design with a traditional exterior.

It didn't take long for a crowd to gather Tuesday morning inside the new Wendy's restaurant on Harlem Avenue. By noon, a lunch rush had already descended on the fast-food restaurant during its first full day open to the public. Some diners who sat down for lunch were glad to see the national chain come to town. The location features a more contemporary design inside with an exterior similar to other traditional locations. "This is upgraded," said Duaa Huseen, 14, of Tinley Park. "I like it." Wendy's ranks among her favorite fast-food joints and was excited to see the new spot, which features a flat-screen television, touch-screen soda dispensers and modern decor. New Wendy's Opening Tuesday

In business news, the national, fast-food burger chain has built a new location in Palos Heights. Meanwhile, McDonald's is expected to open up in November and a new religious gifts store is coming to Harlem Avenue.

The City of Palos Heights regularly keeps residents up on the newest comings and goings in the business community. Palos' most recent news involves a couple of burger joints that you've probably seen before. Wendy's, the burger fast-food chain, has a new location at 12875 S. Harlem Avenue. It's part of the new Jewel-Osco redevelopment project. Those who desire one of their Old Fashioned Hamburgers with the square patties can rejoice. The new location opens today, Oct. 23. Burger lovers will have to wait just a little while longer for Golden Arches to return. The redeveloped McDonald's, just a block away from Wendy's, is expected to open at the end of November. McDonald's is remodeling after demolishing its older store at 7100 W. 127th St. …

Sperone's on Harlem: What Should Go Here?

This former Italian joint sits on a prime piece of Harlem Avenue real estate. Do you want another restaurant to move in? Or would you rather see some new kind of business?

Before things to a turn for the worse, Sperone's was part of a spate of new businesses that popped up between 122nd and 124th streets on Harlem in 2010 and 2011, including Papa's Fresh Foods and Chalet Florist. That same area also has struggled to keep other tenants, such as Baumann's Bakery, which was featured on a previous installment of "What Should Go Here?" Sperone's an American and traditional Italian restaurant, opened in May 2010 along Harlem Avenue. While it was still around, Sperone's featured live music and DJ's weekly in its restaurant area and bar. It closed in July.  The empty building, which features an outdoor seating area around back, is looking for a new tenant. Keep up on the latest! Like Palos Patch on Facebook and sign…

I would like to know what happened to the "long term development" plan that we paid 50 thousand dollars to have drawn up about 5 years ago. Why was this done if we were not planning on using it. The plan did include parking being moved to the back of the stores. Lets use what we already have follow through with the long term plan it was beautiful and is just what everyone is looking for. I agree …   more ›

Pics: Out With the Old Jewel, In With the New

The old Palos Heights Jewel-Osco building is being torn down this week.

The new Jewel-Osco in Palos Heights opened on June 28 and workers are moving quickly to tear down the old structure.  Located directly behind the old building at 127th Street and Harlem Avenue, the new Jewel features a larger store and modern shopping amenities. The site will soon be home to a Wendy's and an additional out-lot is also planned.  The project also required extensive drainage work and a new stoplight at Ishnala Drive.  Read More:

Palos Town Square Development: Where It Stands and What's Next

The Palos Town Square Development, planned for College Drive and Harlem Avenue, enters a new phase of planning.

The Palos Town Square project now moves toward the final, and likely much slower, process of developing a final plan to submit to the city.  Last week the full Palos Heights City Council approved the drafting of preliminary plan for the proposed development on the corner of College Drive and Harlem Avenue in a 7-1 vote. The passage came after approval from the Planning Unit Development Commission and the Planning and Zoning Committee.  The move allows developer Lagestee-Mulder to move forward with more detailed plans for the site and financial negotiations with the city. While the preliminary plan details a site layout, building size and parking plans, a final plan would include very specific details about every aspect of the project.   At…
