Suspect in Radio Shack Robbery Surrenders Peacefully After Standoff

Police have a man in custody they believe robbed the Palos Heights electronics chain Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe Wednesday afternoon's armed robbery of the Radio Shack on Harlem Avenue could be connected with a similar robbery in Frankfort last week. A suspect in the robbery was peacefully taken into custody today by Oak Lawn police after he fled Palos Heights Wednesday, police said. He is described as a male black, about 40 years old. The suspect entered the Radio Shack at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, drew a handgun and demanded money from the two employees who were in the store, said Palos Heights Deputy Chief Dave Delaney. One employee ran out the back door of the building but a second stayed behind, police said. The gunman ordered female employee who stayed behind to give him money. This has become all too common in Radioshack. There has been a string of robberies and the employees are helpless to protect themselves. The Tandy corp refuses to provided security to theses stores. I guess it will require that someone dies in one of their establishments for them to provide a safety net for all theses innocent people..   more ›

UPDATE: Local Cops, FBI Lead Manhunt for Armed Robber in Oak Lawn

A police perimeter has been set up around a Bank of America branch in Oak Lawn, where police said a robbery occurred this afternoon.

Updated 8:37 p.m. FBI and South Suburban Crime Reponse are searching the air conditioning ducts because blood was found earlier in the upstairs, Oak Lawn Division Chief Kaufmann said. Police are using remote control cameras to search inside the ducts. Two teams are searching; one FBI and one South Suburban Crime Response are doing the search. "They are still methodically looking, it's going to take time," Kaufmann said. Reports that police heard barricading are inaccurate. Kaufmann also would not confirm if the robber was armed with a TEC 9 gun. He said the robber was armed with an automatic handgun. i want to wait on results before i start with the second guessing. There was one squad at freshline with its lights on. Someone employed at the strore got on the intercom and asked the shoppers not to leave.Whether the Freshline employees acted on their own or were asked by police i do not know...The people in the store thought a gunman was loose.   more ›
