Akram Alshoweat of Oak Lawn and Mohammed Shaban of Hickory Hills each pleaded guilty to one count of felony hate crime Tuesday and were sentenced to 24 months of probation. Other charges were dismissed.
A hate crime and robbery case against two southwestern suburban men that began more than two years ago ended Tuesday, as the pair pleaded guilty to one felony count each of a hate crime. Akram Alshoweat, 24, of Oak Lawn and Mohammed Shaban, 37, of Hickory Hills were each sentenced to 24 months probation by Cook County Judge Colleen Ann Hyland in her Bridgeview courtroom. The two men were charged in connection to a June 28, 2010 incident where police say they attacked a woman they believed to be a lesbian outside a Hickory Hills restaurant. They shouted slurs at the woman in Arabic, and then punched and kicked her as she tried to leave, prosecutors said. However, the men's attorneys contended that the tussle was self-defense against the …

The traffic snarl at Southwest Highway and Ridgeland Avenue due to construction will end this week when all lanes reopen, IDOT says.
The Southwest Highway bridge replacement over Stoney Creek and the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad, along with improvements to the intersection at Ridgeland Avenue in Chicago Ridge and Oak Lawn will be finished this week. All lanes on Southwest Highway and Ridgeland Avenue also are scheduled to reopen sometime Tuesday morning, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced. “The bridge and intersection are completed,” IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell said. “Everything will be reopened.” Construction on the $10.9 million project began in March 2010. The project involved removing and replacing the Southwest Highway bridge deck and supporting girders just west of Ridgeland Avenue, according to IDOT. The project’s completion …

Osama bin Laden's murderous actions heightened fear and suspicion of all Muslims. A Bridgeview Mosque leader hopes for better days ahead.
Days after 9-11, a patriotism rally in Oak Lawn turned ugly and an anti-Arab mob marched through the streets toward the Bridgeview mosque. Almost a full 10 years later, as the president announced that the mastermind behind the 9-11 attacks had been shot to death by U.S. Navy Seals, a celebratory crowd gathered outside the White House. As word spread, fireworks could be heard at homes around the south suburbs. Meanwhile, the folks at the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview found reason to be relieved, even reason to hope. "After 10 years of sadness, fear and uncertainty, we have been under extreme pressure," said Oussama Jammal, vice president of the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, explaining the feelings that have pervaded the American Muslim…

I would still LOVE to see an overpass on Ridgeland for the freighter that holds up traffic for hours each day....getting tired of driving to Harlem to avoid it. This is a project we desperately need. Look how nice it is to drive down 111th st since that overpass was built. I know it would be a major inconvenience for a while, but so worth it in the end! Anyone know WHY it was never done????   more ›
