'Never quit' attitude helps Astros turn a potential runaway into a nervous affair for top-seeded Thornton in the Lincoln-Way North Regional semifinals.
Right after Brian Greene Jr. had received an alley oop pass from Jay Parker and hammered it home to give Thornton a 12-0 lead in Tuesday's Lincoln-Way North Regional game against Shepard, a fan in the stands hollered, "This one is over." It certainly looked that way from the start, as the Wildcats built a 26-9 lead after the first quarter and were seemingly well on their way to win No. 24 on the season. But Shepard’s seniors didn't plan on ending their careers without putting up a fight, and the team pulled together. Ultimately, Thornton escaped with a 63-58 win, but Shepard brought plenty of drama to the regional semifinal showdown. The timing could not have been better for an upset of epic proportions. March had just arrived on Tuesday. …

Thornton 63, Shepard 58. Astros rally, but come up short in Tuesday's semifinal at the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North Regional.
The Hot Read: It appeared as if it was heading toward a blowout. Thornton jumped to a 10-0 lead before Shepard realized what had hit them in Tuesday night's semifinal at the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North Regional. The Wildcat lead was extended to 26-9 at the end of one quarter and it appeared as if Shepard's season was going to end on the negative side of a blowout. But Shepard came to life and never quit, cutting the deficit to just five points late in the ballgame. Still, the Wildcats made enough free throws in the fourth quarter to avoid a colossal upset in a 63-58 win. Patch's MVP: Shepard junior Martece Weatherspoon proved to be an offensive threat on the break as well as on set plays inside and beyond the three-point arc. Weatherspoon …

Bulldogs eyeing conference title, while Astros are looking for steady improvement.
With a 7-2 record, Richards is in contention for the South Suburban Red title. Coach John Chappetto knows his team has weaknesses, and he’s intent on addressing them before the postseason. Like all coaches, Chappetto is looking for consistent effort. "We have to be on the same page and not get complacent when we have the lead," he said. Having a star player such as Dominique Gaddis, who scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Richards’ win 70-59 win over Shepard on Friday night, has its obvious benefits. But there can be some concerns, too. "With a player of Gaddis' ability to make shots from anywhere, it’s hard to keep the other players from wanting to take the same shots, the difference being that Gaddis hits 90 percent of them," …

Shepard's boys basketball team falters in the face of Rich East's third-quarter pressure.
At halftime of Shepard's matchup with Rich East on Tuesday night, all seemed under control for the Astros. But Rich East's pressure defense in the third quarter rattled Shepard, and the host Rockets went on to claim a 57-53 victory in Park Forest. "The third quarter, without a doubt, we opened without an energy level," Shepard coach Tony Chiuccariello said. "We got out of rhythm." The Astros (2-7) had also dug themselves a hole in the first half, falling behind 20-13 when Rich East forward Ronald Lawton buried a jumper from the free-throw line at the first quarter buzzer. Shepard, however, was able to recover from the deficit. Trailing 24-18, the Astros went on a 9-2 run to take a 27-26 lead into halftime. Astros guard Matt Hoge scored …

Shepard guard scores 16 of his 21 points in the second half to turn back the Bengals.
Shepard Astros junior guard Matt Hoge got off to a slow start against the Oak Forest Bengals on Friday night. But Hoge more than made up for it by scoring 16 points in the second half and leading the Astros to a 66-62 victory over the visiting Bengals. The Astros (2-4, 1-0) jumped out to an 8-0 lead, only to see the Bengals go on a 7-0 run of their own. It was that kind of game throughout, as the lead changed hands three times. The Astros led 26-24 at halftime, and Hoge got untracked shortly after intermission as Shepard initiated the drive-and-kickout. That put Hoge in position to start draining shots. He finished with 21 points. "I was just in the right place to knock down the open shot," said Hoge, who added four rebounds and went 5-of-…
