Pics: Out With the Old Jewel, In With the New

The old Palos Heights Jewel-Osco building is being torn down this week.

The new Jewel-Osco in Palos Heights opened on June 28 and workers are moving quickly to tear down the old structure.  Located directly behind the old building at 127th Street and Harlem Avenue, the new Jewel features a larger store and modern shopping amenities. The site will soon be home to a Wendy's and an additional out-lot is also planned.  The project also required extensive drainage work and a new stoplight at Ishnala Drive.  Read More:

Palos Park Police Blotter: DUIs, Stolen Wallets and Taxi Tantrum

A "For Sale" sign valued at $200 was taken from the parkway of a home on the 12600 block of Rosemary, police said. Timothy Gerhardt, 24, of the 11900 block of Southwest Highway in Palos Park, was charged with public intoxication, two counts of criminal damage to property and theft of labor services. After Gerhardt took a taxi to his home, he refused to pay his $11 fare and began screaming, "I'm going to kill you," to the cab driver, police said. Gerhardt punched the cab's meter and GPS unit, damaging both, police said. Gerhardt was slurring his words and smelled heavily of alcohol, police said. After his arrest, he gave police several disconnected telephone numbers and told officers that, "because he was a Palos Park resident he was going …
