Patch has updated its list of different charitable efforts around Beverly, Mt. Greenwood, Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos this holiday season.
As the holiday spirit settles over the area, several annual food, toy and monetary charitable efforts are kicking into high gear to help the less fortunate in our community this holiday season. We've rounded up several holiday drives that will allow you to give back locally. If you know of others, please share them in the comments. Christmas Care The Worth Township Youth Commission is sponsoring its annual Christmas Care program for families experiencing financial difficulties. Dear Editor: As long as I have been a police officer, I have never gotten used to the sorrow I feel when I am called to the scene of a crash where someone has died. Making matters worse is all too often when I witness that those in the crash were not buckled up or alcohol was involved. This senseless loss of human life is a harsh reality here in the Village of Palos Park and across Illinois — year after year. The fact is that impaired-driving deaths have declined significantly since the 1980s. Social activism, including the rise of organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM), led to tighter laws that helped bring the death toll down. Students in German Club at Shepard High School last week covered themselves in icing, gum drops, and cookie crumbs all in the pursuit of better architecture. The annual gingerbread house contest produced an afternoon of fun and culture. German teacher Jennifer Fischer placed the gingerbread houses in the faculty cafeteria for judging. Students who won included Haley Coates, first place; Kiersten Mahler, second place; and, the team of Trav Jarman, Charlie Dziedzic, third place. Palos Park and Palos Heights both held holiday celebrations on Friday.
Palos Heights and Palos Park both held holiday celebrations on Friday night signaling the official start of the Christmas season. Heights' event was a tree lighting ceremony at the Palos Heights Fire District. The event featured Santa Claus who made his grand enterence on a fire truck. A hayride took families past the Art Garden where almost two dozen Christmas trees were decorated by area schools and organizations. Mayor Bob Straz flipped the switch and lit the firehouse's tree. In Palos Park a holiday Bazaar was held at the Recreation Center. Local businesses set up booths while school groups entertained the crowd.

Introducing a new Patch contest
Does your house outshine all others in your neighborhood when it comes to holiday decorations? If the answer is yes, starting Dec. 8, enter Patch's Deck the House Contest for a chance to win $100,000 for your local public school system, $500 toward your electric bill or bragging rights in your neighborhood. The contest will run until Dec. 26 and Palos Patch users will vote for the best-decked house in their town. From there, Patch judges will select 24 finalists nationwide, who will get their December electric bill paid by Patch (up to $500). The grand prize winner will receive a $100,000 donation to their local school system. We'll give you an update with more details next week, but for now, get decorating. And don't forget to take photos!
