The Carl Sandburg High School Varsity Eagles baseball team matched the Homewood-Flossmoor Vikings run for run until the end, losing 4-3 in the 8th inning.
The Carl Sandburg High School Eagles Varsity baseball team lost a close game at home Thursday to the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Vikings. Two days after Sandburg won 10-1 against Homewood-Flossmoor, the Vikings proved to be an evenly matched competitor, winning the game 4-3 in the 8th inning. Both teams left several runners behind on bases as the game progressed, with the Eagles nailing 9 hits and the Vikings with 10 hits. The Eagles will next face Downers Grove South at home, while the Vikings take on Bloom High School in Chicago Heights. Both games are scheduled for Saturday. Anastasia Scourtes lost her mother to cancer in March, and responded by raising over $4,200 for cancer research leading up to this weekend’s Relay for Life. She will be the keynote speaker Friday at Sandburg.
Anastasia Scourtes originally got involved with Relay for Life two years ago simply because she felt it was a great cause. The 17-year-old Carl Sandburg High School senior noted then on her Relay for Life webpage that cancer had not affected her or her loved ones at the time. Shortly thereafter, her father John Scourtes was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Anastasia raised about $500 leading up to the 2011 relay, while her father underwent treatment and surgery. Toward the middle of that summer, he recovered. But the Scourtes’ fight with cancer wasn’t over. In fall 2011, Anastasia’s mother Chris Scourtes was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, which required stronger treatment. “It was a cause that got very personal and meant a lot to me,” …
The two area high schools will be hosting all night fundraising and awareness events sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
Carl Sandburg High School and Alan B. Shepard High School are hosting Relays for Life between Friday and Sunday. Relay for Life is an effort through the American Cancer Society to raise money for research and awareness about the disease, while honoring friends and loved ones lost to cancer. The events include overnight campouts around a track, where someone is always walking around the track. “We don’t sleep that night because cancer never sleeps,” Erica Gillian, American Cancer Society event organizer, said in a release. Sandburg cross-country and track athlete Pat McMahon was awarded a scholarship from Foot Locker, for his athletic and academic accomplishments and his drive to overcome cystic fibrosis.
Pat McMahon thought he was in for another day in honors Spanish. The 18-year-old from Orland Park, and Carl Sandburg High School senior, was led with his classmates to the school’s Little Theater, under the notion that they would be learning about scholarships, when a few minutes into the presentation two men from Foot Locker presented him with a check for $20,000. Iran Pagan, district manager for Foot Locker, described McMahon’s accomplishments, including holding a 4.0 GPA while also excelling in track and cross country. McMahon ranks second in the state for the mile run, was all state last year in track, qualified four times for state in cross country and was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was 2-years-old. “It’s a beautiful thing…

A student discovered a replica grenade rolling on a bus floor and gave it to the bus driver, according to an official release by the Orland Park Police Department. The Consolidated High School District 230 board also gave the go ahead for IDOT to buy land to then widen LaGrange Road, which is expected to begin later this year.
The Consolidated High School District 230 Board of Trustees unanimously approved a 15-item list of repairs, updates and renovations for all three high schools during the March 20 meeting. A total of $1,717,000 worth of repairs were green lighted for Chicago-based Poulos, Inc., which was the lowest bid out of eight, according to school district documents. The repairs include main office alterations and asbestos removal at Stagg, media center alterations on both the first and second floors at Andrew, tennis court resurfacing and cashier’s office alterations at Sandburg, and new gym floors installed at both Stagg and Sandburg. The Consolidated High School District 230 administration is looking to create an advisory/resource period for all students by starting studies at 8 a.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. beginning in August.
In effort to extend tutoring and other services beyond class work help, Consolidated High School District 230 administrators are planning to start school days 30 minutes earlier during the 2013-2014 school year. Freshmen and sophomores at Carl Sandburg High School, Amos Alonzo Stagg High School and Victor J. Andrew High School now have access to a 25-minute advisory period during the day with the same teacher, but the change would expand the program to all students and also add variety to the study period. Consolidated High School District 230 are looking within their ranks and outside for a new candidate to fill the large shoes left behind by Bruce Scheidegger. In the meantime, current staff are picking up the slack, according to The Regional News.
Finding the right candidate to replace Carl Sandburg High School’s beloved athletic director Bruce Scheidegger may take some time. While Consolidated High School District 230 is preparing to start searching for the right candidate, Sandburg’s physical education department chair Steve McInerney is serving as the interim athletic director with help from Mike Polz, Sandburg’s assistant athletic director, according to a report by Jeff Vorva for The Regional News. The head of Carl Sandburg High School athletics was found dead in Carroll County early Sunday morning outside of southwest of Freeport. Those who knew Scheidegger remembered him as a supportive and caring figure in the school.
Bruce Scheidegger, who served as Carl Sandburg High School’s athletic director for the last five years, was found dead early Sunday morning, according to law enforcement. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was first told by the Orland Park Police Department around 11:05 p.m. Saturday that Scheidegger was missing. Scheidegger’s car was found shortly after on Loran Road near Indian Trail Road, north of Mt. Carroll, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. The car left the road, drove over a steep embankment and overturned, according to the release. The accident is still under investigation.
