A corner location near Ridgeland and 135th is empty. What business could come to Palos Heights and take that spot?
An ice cream chain couldn't stay afloat in Palos Heights but that just means a new business can potentially move in. Cold Stone Creamery, for a while could be found near the intersection of Ridgeland Avenue and 135th Street, closed. It was in a great location and was near such other fantastic local restaurants, including Al's Pizzeria. The empty storefront also is just down the road from Shepard High School and all the hungry students who attend. Palos Heights is seeing some impressive new business development so I wouldn't be surprised if this location is snatched up soon. Join the conversation. The pizza restaurant is brand new in town but already has drawn a crowd.
Palos Heights' newest pizza place has launched with a bang. Lucano's Pizza opened for business Tuesday to a surprising response from the community, said owner Alex Dreznes. He said business that first day far exceed what they expected. "We turned the "Open" sign off, it was so busy," Dreznes said. Lucano's feature item is their thin crust pizza. Dreznes said they got their training and has worked as a franchisee with Barraco's Pizza since 2006, operating locations Lisle and Crest Hill. In June, they broke off from the big chain and rebranded to Lucano's. Join the conversation. Friend Palos Patch on Facebook and sign up for the daily email newsletter! The new fast-food restaurant features a contemporary interior design with a traditional exterior.
It didn't take long for a crowd to gather Tuesday morning inside the new Wendy's restaurant on Harlem Avenue. By noon, a lunch rush had already descended on the fast-food restaurant during its first full day open to the public. Some diners who sat down for lunch were glad to see the national chain come to town. The location features a more contemporary design inside with an exterior similar to other traditional locations. "This is upgraded," said Duaa Huseen, 14, of Tinley Park. "I like it." Wendy's ranks among her favorite fast-food joints and was excited to see the new spot, which features a flat-screen television, touch-screen soda dispensers and modern decor. The more than 30-year-old, family-run operation is looking to take on the suburbs, one town at a time.
When Robert Peplowski was young, he couldn't figure out why all of his fellow classmates were jealous of his lunch. To Robert, growing up with sandwiches piled high with meats, cheeses and seasoned veggies—known as "the guts"—was the usual. It wouldn't dawn on him until later than growing up in the family business of the Palos Hills-based Peppo's Dili-Deli had its advantages. "I didn't really understand it much back then," said the co-owner of the newest Peppo's location in Tinley Park. "I didn't really recognize until high school when my friends really started to talk about it." It wasn't until college in business school that the idea of why Peppo's was so successful became clear to Peplowski. That long tradition in the community is what …

Remodeling at a Harlem Avenue building is underway for a new 7-Eleven. During approval of a liquor license for the convenience store, alderman raised concerns about safety.
Another well-known convenience shop is expected to pop up in Palos Heights soon. A new 7-Eleven location near Harlem and College avenues, which is currently under construction, will be open 24 hours a day. Last month, the City Council approved a liquor license for the well-known convenience store. Palos Heights aldermen raised concerns about safety in the store for cashiers who would be working alone at night. "I have no problem with the liquor license but I'm concerned about young girls ... being alone at the wee hours of the morning," said Alderman Jack Clifford. All stores have alarms and are equipped with panic buttons and security cameras, according to 7-Eleven representatives who spoke to the council. Keep up on the latest! Like …

Several aldermen have sent clear messages that more banks in Palos Heights are not welcome.
It went as fast as it came. The proposed Palos Town Square development was tossed out last month by the city council in a narrow 4-3 vote. The development's preliminary plan sailed through three previous votes before the ultimate death blow. The primary issue was the developer's plan to place a bank on the corner of Harlem Avenue and Route 83. "[Residents] don’t want to see another bank in town," Ald. Dolores Kramarski said at the time. "I don’t think something is better than nothing." Ald. Jack Clifford expressed dismay that the plan would be struck down at a preliminary stage, before the developer even had a chance to make changes. "They didn't even give [the developer] a chance," he said. The aldermen have had their say, now we want …
