The players from rival schools honored the memory of Brother Rice graduate Andrew Weishar who died at age 21
The stands were filled with blue shirts printed with the number 45. It was Andrew Weishar's number, and they played for him. The longtime rivalry between Brother Rice and Marist was forgotten for several minutes as the two schools came together to recognize a young man lost too soon. Andrew Weishar died in October after a three year long battle with colorectal cancer. The Brother Rice graduate was just 21 years old. Brother Rice High School was proud to celebrate its 53rd commencement Thursday. Of the 222 students who graduated, they amassed some $10 million in scholarships. Sixty percent of the class over a four year period were on the honor roll and 92 percent were accepted to the first or second school of their choosing. President James Antos gave a rousing commencement address encouraging the young men to "act manly in Christ Jesus," the school's motto. As the ceremony was cut short by a premature hat-tossing, the grads were escorted out past their class purchase of an large orange inflatable character holding a cap in one hand and diploma in the other. Former students seeking claims against Irish Christian Brothers must show religious order knew certain members were a danger to children. Deadline to file is Aug. 1.
Documents amassed by a Seattle-based law firm show that although the Irish Christian Brothers knew one of its members may have molested students at Brother Rice High School, they still sent him to other schools. The allegations came to light after a bankruptcy filing by the Irish Christian Brothers in an attempt to cap any damages from former students filing claims alleging sexual or physical abuse by members of the religious order who taught at the high schools. Massive outpouring of well-wishers watch solemn procession for Cpl. Conner Lowry.
Conner Lowry left the South Side a man, but returned home a hero who gave his life to something bigger than himself. Hundreds of well-wishers, high school students and schoolchildren lined the streets of Oak Lawn, Evergreen Park and Mt. Greenwood, to watch the fallen Marine’s homecoming to the Beverly neighborhood that he loved and where he had grown up as a boy. Watch the video of CPL. LOWRY's motorcade. The motorcade will stop in front of Brother Rice High School where taps will be played for alumnus Marine Cpl Conner Lowry during Friday's procession.
The motorcade route for a fallen local marine killed in Afghanistan last week has been finalized for Friday, March 9. Hundreds of schoolchildren and community members are expected to line the streets to pay their respects to Cpl. Conner Lowry, 24, a Humvee gunner who died in Afghanistan on March 1. Lowry was a 2006 graduate of Brother Rice High School and resided in Beverly. His death is still being investigated. His body is expected to arrive at Midway Airport around 8 a.m. Friday, where he will be met by family members and a funeral honors team from the 2nd Battalion 24th Marine Regiment Reservists stationed at Foster and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago. Funeral arrangements and a solemn procession are planned for a young Marine killed in Afghanistan last week. Cpl. Conner Lowry, 24, was serving as a Humvee gunner when he died on March 2. Lowry was conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Community members are encouraged to line the procession route and pay their respects when the fallen marine passes through Oak Lawn this Friday. Marine Cpl. Conner Lowry, 24, of Beverly, died in Afghanistan on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The Chicago Tribune reported that a Beverly Marine was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday. Cpl. Conner Lowry, 24, was a gunner riding on a Humvee when he was killed, according to his family. Lowry attended St. John Fisher School and was an alumnus of Brother Rice High School. A family friend, sixth-grade teacher Christine McElroy at Christ the King School, and her students were preparing to send Lowry a care package for St. Patrick's Day, according to the Southtown-Star. The Marine corporal was attending the University of Iowa when he enlisted in the military. His family said he had been in Afghanistan since October.

Patch talked to a few Brother Rice students Thursday about a hate crime incident that happened over winter break, when three white teens threatened a black student's life.
After speaking with Brother Brother Rice High School officials about a hate crime incident involving two of their current students and one alumnus, Patch hit the streets to ask students their take on the situation. Chicago police recently charged three teens with perpetrating a hate crime on Dec. 23 in the 1600 block of South 100th Pl. A Brother Rice student, Joshua Merritt, 17, was the victim and one of the accused is a classmate. Merritt said Matthew Herrmann, 18, of Alsip and two other teens forced him to wear a noose and threatened his life, according to police.
