Brother Rice HS: Will Use Hate Crime Incident to Teach Tolerance

After a 17-year old black Brother Rice student was threatened with a noose by three teens, one of whom was a classmate, the school's President said it's using it to teach kids tolerance.

Brother Rice High School officials are continuing to investigate a hate crime incident involving two of their current students and one alumnus. Chicago police recently charged three teens with perpetrating a hate crime on Dec. 23 in the 1600 block of South 100th Pl. A Brother Rice student, Joshua Merritt, 17, was the victim and one of the accused is a classmate. Merritt said Matthew Herrmann, 18, of Alsip and two other teens forced him to wear a noose and threatened his life, according to police. Earlier today, Brother Rice High School principal James Antos responded to the incident "as of right now, the student is removed from school." Playoff Primer: High School Football Hot Picks for Round 2

Subbing in for Sports Editor Ron Kremer, Chuck Ingwersen predicts the winners in the eight second-round playoff games involving Southland Patch teams.

No. 13 Lockport (7-3) at No. 11 Homewood-Flossmoor (7-3), 7 p.m. Friday Quick take: H-F’s offense, led by quarterback Tim Williams and running back Anfernee Roberts, looked unstoppable during much of last week's 48-28 thrashing of Marist. Lockport barely survived an 18-15 scare against Simeon last week. H-F dominated Lockport 35-0 on Sept. 30 at Lockport. Pick: Homewood-Flossmoor No. 6 Brother Rice (7-3) at No 3 Downers Grove South (9-1), 7 p.m. Friday Quick take: Brother Rice running backs Andrew Walker and Martez Walker rushed for a combined 330 yards and four touchdowns in the Crusaders’ 35-14 rout of Sandburg last week, and they will surely test the DGS defense. Downers Grove South has a monster back of its own in Josh Williams (over 2…

Evergreen wins!!!!! I'm in Plainwell (MI) for some R & R and turned down an offer to see Plainwell play Paw Paw (in Paw Paw). Glad I did as Plainwell lost 41 - 13 *ugh* I must say though it was easy to find score updates on the MI teams, I had to give up checking on scores for Illinois teams in general (at least a few had live feeds).   more ›

Football: Brother Rice Gets It Done In Overtime Against Marist

Brother Rice 34, Marist 31: Crusaders' ground game powers past the RedHawks defense in OT victory.

Breaking It Down: Martez Walker rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns to spearhead a punishing Brother Rice ground game, but it was Andrew Walker's 2-yard run in overtime that propelled the Crusaders to a 34-31 road victory over Marist High. The game-winner came after Marist took a 31-28 lead on a 30-yard field goal by Cillian Hannon. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Marist came out of the locker room with a renewed fighting spirit and ripped off three touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead with 3:53 to go in the third quarter. RedHawks wide receiver/defensive back Ryan Meyer led the charge with an interception return for a touchdown, a TD run and a 24-yard reception that set up his scoring run. Patch's MVP: Andrew Walker, Brother Rice. Walker's …

Glory Days

Donahue: Former Brother Rice Standout Starred for Michigan Legend Bo Schembechler

Oak Lawn native Mark Donahue also enjoyed NFL stint playing on the offensive line across from the likes of Randy White and Mean Joe Greene.

Mark Donahue remembers how excited he was when Brother Rice earned the right to play St. Laurence in the Chicago Catholic League championship game at Soldier Field on Thanksgiving Day in 1972. Donahue’s excitement was tempered a bit, however, when conference Player of the Year, Kevin King, stole the show. “He kicked our butts,” said Donahue, who was a standout two-way performer for the Crusaders’ football team. “I still remember the headline in the Sun-Times after they beat us: King for a Day. He was awesome and was a fabulous running back. I played defense, too, and apparently my skills were much better on offense because I couldn’t touch him.” Little did he know at the time, but Donahue would eventually go on to be roommates with his …
