Boys Basketball: Marist Stung by Hinsdale South

Hinsdale South 76, Marist 55. After rallying to take the lead in the first half, the Redhawks go ice-cold from the floor and fall to the host Hornets in the Hinsdale South Regional semifinal game.

The Hot Read: Marist’s rally from an early 18-3 hole to take a 30-23 lead midway through the second quarter would be short-lived. Hinsdale South blitzed the suddenly cold-shooting Redhawks with a 14-1 run to close the first half and outscored them 19-5 in the third quarter. With its 76-55 victory, Hinsdale South advanced to the regional championship game. Patch’s MVP: Hornets guard Phil George scored a game-high 25 points, including 12 of the team’s 19 in the third quarter. He sank five three-pointers in the game and shot 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line.  Key Stats: The Redhawks shot a dismal 20-of-64 from the field for the game. The Hornets shot 27-of-50.  Hinsdale South’s Leaders: In addition to George: Joe Petrak (15 …

Analysis: Shepard's Seniors Leave Everything on the Floor in Frankfort

'Never quit' attitude helps Astros turn a potential runaway into a nervous affair for top-seeded Thornton in the Lincoln-Way North Regional semifinals.

Right after Brian Greene Jr. had received an alley oop pass from Jay Parker and hammered it home to give Thornton a 12-0 lead in Tuesday's Lincoln-Way North Regional game against Shepard, a fan in the stands hollered, "This one is over." It certainly looked that way from the start, as the Wildcats built a 26-9 lead after the first quarter and were seemingly well on their way to win No. 24 on the season. But Shepard’s seniors didn't plan on ending their careers without putting up a fight, and the team pulled together. Ultimately, Thornton escaped with a 63-58 win, but Shepard brought plenty of drama to the regional semifinal showdown. The timing could not have been better for an upset of epic proportions. March had just arrived on Tuesday. …

Analysis: Steady Nerves Help Andrew Hold Off Stagg

The Thunderbolts went 12-of-13 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter Tuesday night to ice a hard-fought game and move into the Stagg Regional final.

No matter who was on the free-throw line in the fourth quarter for Andrew on Tuesday night, in that pressure-packed moment the season was on the line for the Thunderbolts. Remarkably, the T-Bolts’ free-throw shooters were able to tune out the noise made by the Stagg student section on the opposite end of the court, and those shooters went 12-for-13 from the line in the fourth quarter. That showing from the line helped Andrew pull away for a 48-39 victory in the Stagg Regional semifinal game. The Thunderbolts will meet Lockport in the regional title game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The young man who helped ice the cake for Andrew was junior guard Mike Bobek. He and Glorind Lisha each sank all four of their attempts from the charity stripe inside…

Boys Basketball: Andrew Pulls Away from Stagg in Closing Minutes to Reach Regional Final

Andrew 48, Stagg 39. Thunderbolts go 8-of-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch to advance to the Stagg Regional title game.

The Hot Read: In front of a packed crowd with strong representation from both sides, Andrew and Stagg met for a third time this season—and for the second time on Stagg's home court. This time, it was for a berth in the Stagg Regional championship game against Lockport. Both teams kept pace with each other for most of the game, with neither leading by more than five points before the final two minutes. Free throws made the difference down the stretch, as Stagg sent Andrew to the line repeatedly in the closing minutes and the T-Bolts went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in that stretch to seal the victory, 48-39. Key Stats: Andrew used its height advantage to outrebound the Chargers 26-20. Andrew was 13-of-16 from the free-throw line on the …

Analysis: Shepard Presses the Issue in Win over Lincoln-Way North

Astros use tough defesne to fuel their second-half comeback win over the Phoenix on Monday night in play at the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North Regional.

OK, let's just say it. The Shepard boys basketball team did everything it could to dig itself a deep hole in the first half of its 51-40 victory over Lincoln-Way North in play on Monday night at the Class 4A Lincoln-Way North Regional. The Astros shot an ice-cold 4-of-27 from the field, 2-of-10 from behind the three-point line and were 1-of-8 from the free-throw line. Throw in the face they also were outrebounded 29-19. And it's a small wonder they trailed only by 16-11 at half. Fortunately for the Astros, even though their offense was in a funk half, their defense was up to the task. Shepard dug in and used a physical man-to-man to make every trip down the floor for the Phoenix a struggle to even get a shot. Shepard (13-14) still trailed …

Extra Points: Oak Lawn, Shepard Set for Second Season

Playoffs provide one last chance for Spartan, Astro players to show their coaches and fans what they have learned during the regular season.

There is an excitement in Scott Atkins' voice. “We have been playing well the last month and a half," the Oak Lawn boys basketball coach said following the Spartans' 67-61 victory over Shepard on Friday night. "We are playing like a team on both sides of the court. "Our players like the feeling of winning. We are going to give it all we can to advance in the playoffs. This is what it's all about." This is what is in store for Oak Lawn in the Class 4A playoffs: The Spartans face Argo at 6 p.m. Monday in a regional game at St. Rita. When the two met earlier, Oak Lawn prevailed. But expect both teams to dial it up a notch. The winner will move on to face Chicago Mt. Carmel at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. And, from there, it's on to the regional final …
