The players from rival schools honored the memory of Brother Rice graduate Andrew Weishar who died at age 21
The stands were filled with blue shirts printed with the number 45. It was Andrew Weishar's number, and they played for him. The longtime rivalry between Brother Rice and Marist was forgotten for several minutes as the two schools came together to recognize a young man lost too soon. Andrew Weishar died in October after a three year long battle with colorectal cancer. The Brother Rice graduate was just 21 years old. Kevin Walsh is accused of pushing a police officer after a basketball game at Stagg High School.
Although "a healthy rivalry" exists between Andrew and Stagg high schools, incidents such as the Dec. 7 brawl in which one student is accused of pushing a police officer aren't representative of the relationship the District 230 schools share, a district spokeswoman said. In these cases, the "poor decisions" of a small group of students take away from the positive things that go on between Stagg and Andrew, said Carla Erdey, spokeswoman for District 230. "The students work together on a lot of projects in their communities," Erdey said. Kevin P. Marty Strus, of Lewis University, was honored for his skills on and off the court.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced that Lewis University's Marty Strus, a graduate of Stagg High School, was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 4 Men's Basketball Team. Strus, a math major with a minor in secondary education, owns a 3.82 cumulative grade-point-average. He has started all 20 games this season for the Flyers and is averaging 4.3 points and 5.4 rebounds-per-game. "Marty has been a tremendous ambassador for the Lewis men's basketball team," Lewis head men's basketball coach Scott Trost said. She was spinning around Eisenhower's players all night in the Astros' 41-32 girls basktball regional victory on Monday. But for McClinton, her moves are just part of the way she learned to play ball. "It (the spin move) started when I was a little bit younger because I started off playing against boys," she said.
