The Hot Read: Mother McAuley's defense was almost impenetrable in a 53-25 girls basketball victory over Oak Lawn on Thursday night in the Class 4A Mother McAuley Regional championship game. The Mighty Macs held the Spartans to single digits in the first quarter, as they took a 22-8 lead. The second half wasn't much better for the Spartans. The Hot Read: Marist jumped out to a 27-14 lead at the half en route to scoring a 62-24 girls basketball victory over Shepard in semifinal play Wednesday at the Class 4A Shepard Regional. Jamila McClinton used her signature spin move to her advantage in the Astros' 41-32 girls regional basketball victory on Monday night. But she knows it's going to take more than one move to keep Shepard going in the playoffs.
Shepard's Jamila McClinton looked like a ballerina instead of a basketball player. She was spinning around Eisenhower's players all night in the Astros' 41-32 girls basktball regional victory on Monday. But for McClinton, her moves are just part of the way she learned to play ball. "It (the spin move) started when I was a little bit younger because I started off playing against boys," she said. "They were always bigger than me, so I had to figure out some way to get it up there. Spinning was what I would always go to." McClinton, a senior forward, led the Astros with 15 points and seven rebounds. The Hot Read: Shepard put the pressure on early in a 41-32 girls basketball victory over Eisenhower on Monday night in the first round of regional play. The victory was the seventh straight for the Astros, who jumped to an 18-6 first-quarter lead. Eisenhower started to fight back in the second half, narrowing Shepard's lead to 33-24 at the end of the third quarter. Shepard's Amanda Weiss turned pain into passion as she helped the Astros edge Richards.
For sophomore guard Amanda Weiss, Thursday night was about more than just winning. The Shepard girls basketball game was about honoring the memory of her grandfather. Weiss found the strength to pour her heart and soul into the fray despite losing her grandfather on Thursday morning. Weiss scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds to help the Astros notch a 35-30 victory over Richards. She also nailed a three-pointer that enabled Shepard to regain the lead late in fourth quarter. "She's been stepping up each and every game for the last month," Shepard coach Rick Mundo said. Bengals snap three-game losing streak with a 51-41 victory over Chargers on Tuesday night.
The Bengals are back. Oak Forest was able to bounce back from its three-game losing streak with a victory over Stagg on Tuesday night. Oak Forest defeated Stagg 51-41 behind the play of junior guard Katie Swanson and senior guard Colleen Emmett. Swason said the Bengals were ready to put the skid behind them and start the new year fresh. "We didn't want to look at film," Swanson said. "We wanted to move on from that (the losses) and not go back (to) that." Swanson and Emmett came up big for Bengals (10-5). Swanson scored a game-high 19 points. JeTaun Rouse and the Marist RedHawks brought their 'A' game on Wednesday night, as they claimed third place in the Hillcrest Holiday Tournament with a 52-35 girls basketball victory over Homewood-Flossmoor. Marist coach Mary Pat Connolly said she wasn't allowing her players much room for error. "We were a little bit more composed," Connolly said. "We had a little shorter lease on players. For McAuley, it was good to be home. The Mighty Macs (4-4) impressed a partisan crowd with a 47-34 girls basketball victory over Stagg in their first home game of the season. McAuley put the pressure on early, taking a 6-0 lead. Senior guard Molly Cummings sank a three-pointer to secure a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
