The Sandburg Eagles Varsity Boys Track team are competing in six events at Eastern Illinois University starting today, and looking for a strong finish to an already memorable season.

Going into conference, the team had already broken the 4x200 relay school record, only to break it again while competing in Joliet. “You win conference and sectionals, and it’s a nice year,” Nemeth said while en route to …

Teen Pushes Limits to Run First Midwest Half Marathon for Boston

Annalyn Parks, 13, trained to run eight miles of the First Midwest Half Marathon on Sunday, but after the Boston Marathon attack, she decided to run the full race.

Jamie Parks was sure his daughter Annalyn was ready to run just over 13 miles in one run. She had been preparing in a way for the last five years. Annalyn, 13, has run at least one mile every day since she was 8. There was one time when it was about 15 minutes to midnight and she still hadn’t run, but will power prevailed. “A couple of times, I thought of quitting the streak,” Annalyn said, at her Tinley Park home. “But inside my heart and my brain, I just can't quit now. I've gone so far.” Jamie is an avid runner as well. He is on a streak of running at least a mile a day himself, only his streak goes back for about the last 21 years. Jamie has run the First Midwest Half Marathon almost every year since it began. He runs while pushing his…

Guys, don't get down on each other. It's too easy to get defensive and become negative in your response also. Just let Fred and Sandy voice their thoughts and opinions and just smile and keep doing what you're doing, if it's working for you and bringing you joy. Good job Parks family, I am inspired by you all whether you run every day or not!!   more ›

Over 200 People Run in Solidarity for Boston

Running for Kicks in Palos Heights hosted a run in honor of Boston Monday evening, and saw a turnout that store owner Mel Diab, who ran in the Boston Marathon, described as “amazing.”

The run started with a Facebook event and about 50 people signed up. By Monday night, the number quadrupled when over 200 people showed at Running for Kicks in Palos Heights to participate in their Runners for Boston Solidarity Run. “When I see this big turnout, it’s pretty emotional for me,” said store owner Mel Diab, who ran in the Boston Marathon. “Runners are so communal, we get along with everybody. We have no political agenda. We’re pretty tough guys and girls. We get up on our off day and run 26 miles. This is a blessing. It’s just amazing.” Diab was among about 20 runners from the local Yankee Runners group who ran in Boston last week. Members from the group who also traveled to Boston included James Bruce, Amy Bugala, Christine …

Runners for Boston Solidarity Run Tonight at Running for Kicks

Staff at the Palos Heights running shoes and apparel store decided to join the legions of running stores across the country and hold a run in honor of Boston starting 6 p.m. Monday night.

Gail Ryan saw store after store post on Facebook that they were holding a solidarity run for Boston. Quickly, the sales associate at Running for Kicks floated the idea among fellow staffers and owner Mel Diab, who returned along with the other local Yankee Runners from the Boston Marathon last week. Soon, Running for Kicks had their own event ready. “I started thinking about it and all these stores across the nation seemed to be doing it,” Ryan said. “It grew to almost 100 people right away after we created our event page.” Two runs and one walk will be held starting 6 p.m. Monday from the store, and it's open to all fitness levels. One running route will go through the Ishnala subdivision, while the other will head north of the store, and…
