Photos: Boy Scouts Help Rid Litter in Palos Park

Boy Scout Troop 729 joined together with dozens of other volunteers to clean up Palos Park.

During RID Litter Day in Palos Park, Boy Scout Troop 729 participated in the roadside cleanup of McCarthy Road/123rd Street. The Palos Park Beautification Committee sponsored the cleanup operation, which started at 9 a.m. April 28. Participants collected trash from along the roadway and put it in orange bags for later pickup.

The Boy Scouts picked up garbage along McCarthy Road from 86th Avenue to 96th Avenue, in conjunction with the Illinois Adopt-A-Highway program run by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Troop 729 Scouts started at the at 8901 W.123rd St., with groups heading both east and west from there. After the cleanup, scouts went to the for an ice cream treat.

Participating scouts included Ronny Woods, Tommy Hassel, Ethan and Welby Moore, Ian Reed, Jared Thompson, Desi Athy, Luke Jones, Nick Baker, Shaffer Phillips, David Aurenz, Jimmy Brady and Frank Lennon. An official adopt-a-highway sign from the Illinois Department of Transportation marksthe road the troop has adopted.

Troop 729 is sponsored by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and has activescouts from the area. The church, at 7800 W. McCarthy Road in Palos Heights, serves families fromthroughout the Palos area.

RID Litter Day was a communitywide effort to pick up litter and recyclables from roadways in PalosPark. The beautification committee, led by Denise Cowan, organized roadside cleanup in numerousareas of the village and provided garbage bags and plastic gloves.
