Five Nonprofits Making a Difference: Patch Picks

Palos Patch highlights some local nonprofits making a difference.

With the economy still down and the Christmas season past, it can be a tough time for nonprofits. In this week's installment of Patch Picks I bring you 5 local nonprofits worthy of your time. The list is in no way comprehensive, so feel free to tell us what your favorite local nonprofits are in the comment section.

  • Share Your Soles - Founded in the driveway of Palos Park resident Mona Purdy in 1999, the organization provides shoes to impovrished people all over the world. Over one million shoes have been distributed so far. You can watch a video story I did on the organization several years ago here.
  • Elsie's Pantry - Based out of Moraine Valley Community Church in Palos Hills the pantry provides food to local families in need. To watch a video about the pantry's volunteers .
  • Palos Lions Club - The Lions Club provides food baskets to area families in need each Christmas and does a great deal of work providing hearing and vision care to those in need.
  • Animal Welfare League - Located in Chicago Ridge the organization operates an animal shelter and provides low cost care to pets. Every Friday Palos Patch an adoptable pet from the Animal Welfare League.
  • Honor Flight Chicago - Area World War II veterans are flown to Washington, D.C. for a day of honor and remembrance by this nonprofit. to read the story of one Palos Hills resident who made the trip.
