Wetzel Shows Smarts at Navy’s Football Program

Keegan Wetzel of Palos Heights, who was named Chicago Catholic League Defensive Player of the Year while at St. Laurence High School, is excelling in the classroom and on the field.

A Palos Heights native and former standout Catholic high school football player is coming into his own at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Keegan Wetzel, an outside linebacker for the U.S. Midshipman team, is succeeding both academically and athletically, according to CapitalGazette.com. Wetzel is carrying a 3.89 GPA and having a "breakout" senior year.

“Keegan is a really smart player. He’s able to take things from the classroom and apply them out on the football field,” Navy outside linebackers coach Tony Grantham said. “Football makes sense to him, and that’s not always the case with guys who are book smart.”

After contributing very little his first three seasons in Annapolis, Wetzel is enjoying a breakout campaign as a senior. The 6-foot-3, 218-pounder has lived in opponent’s backfield and leads Navy with 8½ tackles for losses and four sacks.

Wetzel played safety at St. Laurence High and was named Chicago Catholic League Defensive Player of the Year in his senior year.
