Stagg Softball Streak Ends in Extra-Inning Setback

After starting with 15 straight victories, the Chargers dropped a 5-4 decision to Andrew in nine innings.

One streak ended.

So, it must be time to start another, right?

The Stagg softball team started with 15 straight victories. But the Chargers' run was halted in a 5-4 nine-inning loss to rival Andrew on Wednesday.

And, while Lea LaSota stuck out 10, she also gave up 10 hits and four runs. Her team was able to come back and tie the game to force extra innings.

"We were down 4-0, and to battle back was good," Stagg coach Missy Mason said to the Sun-Times' Randy Whalen. "It was a real good streak, now the kids have to learn from this and move on."

Stagg Water Polo Round Up

The Stagg boys water polo team participated in a tournament in St Louis over the weekend. In the first round, Stagg beat Lafayette 16-6. Drew Stoffel led all scorers with six goals. Christian Villanueva made 13 saves in three quarters.

Stagg dropped its next three games and finished the tournament 1-3 with losses to the reigning state champions of Missouri and Illinois. Later in the week, the Chargers got back into the win column with wins over Lincoln-Way West (20-4) and Bradley-Bourbonnais (18-13). Nine players scored against West. Juan Valdez and Zach Golob each had five goals against Bradley.

Stagg Soccer Back in Line

Despina Hadjiagapiou scored the game-winning goal in Stagg's 2-1 victory over Lincoln-Way North. Kasia Gacek scored the game's first goal off of a terrific assist from Tara Tarazoff. Bri Pettas served up the assist for Hadjiagapiou's game winner. Charger senior goalkeeper Andrea Beric was outstanding in the nets, recording a career-high 10 saves. With the win, the Chargers are now 6-2-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

Shepard Baseball Drops a Close One

After jumping to a 2-1 lead, Shepard lost 3-2 in fashion to the Tinley Park in a road baseball game on Thursday. Kevin Siergiej pitched well to hold the Titans to just one run before the bottom of the seventh.

Chicago Christian Roundup

While braving the cold on Monday, Chicago Christian's baseball team notched a 7-4 win over Montini Catholic. Jon Lemmenes had a two-run single and Joe Glotz had a two-run double. Then, on Thursday, trailing 5-2 heading into the top of the seventh, the Knights rallied for five runs to go ahead 7-5 and earn the comeback win over Wheaton Academy.  The win puts Chicago Christian at 16-4 overall and 7-2 in the SCC. Glotz had the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh against Wheaton Academy. Mike Kamp earned the win in relief.

* Chicago Christian's tennis team earned two wins with a 4-1 victory over Bremen on Monday and a 3-2 win over Lisle on Thursday. Dan VanGroningen was victorious in straight sets at first singles, and the top two doubles teams of Brad VanderVelde/Kyle Johnson and Seth Hamstra/Austin VanderVelde also were straight-set winners against Lisle.

The Stagg boys volleyball team Jordan Joseph had six kills for the Chargers.
