Moraine Valley Women's Tennis Team Ready to Work

Tennis team at Palos Hills college returns four veterans as it gets ready for new season.

Hard work and continuous improvement are the name of the game for the Moraine Valley Community College women's tennis team this season. With four returners and five newcomers, the team is set to play.

Daisy Burke (Morton East) is back this year and is the No. 1  singles player for the Cyclones. Sandburg grad Cynthia Rimmer has worked on her court skills and has improved since last season, putting her at the No. 2 spot. Sonia Almaraz (Morton East) and Jenny Morales (Reavis) had limited action with the Cyclones last year, but expect to battle for a slot in the lineup this time around.

There is much potential with the new arrivals, including Jessica Schiesl (Oak Lawn), Brittanie Fourte (Eisenhower) and Nicole Baffin (Reavis). Nicole Mazor (Shepard) played on the Cyclone women's soccer and basketball teams last season, and this athlete is taking her skills to the tennis courts this year. Veronica Canseco (Argo) also comes from a cross country and soccer background, and is already showing much promise with a racket in hand.

"I think this is a good group," said coach Bill Finn. "We're looking to improve every week and play our best matches by the end of the season. We've already improved since the first day, so good things are ahead for this team."

Finn will be joined this year by assistant coach Matt Pietruszka, who is a local tennis instructor.
