Gimme 5: Shepard's Alarcon, Ramel Reach Beyond Obvious Goals

For Astro senior softball standouts Alexandria Alarcon and Emily Ramel, it's not all about winning. Rather, it's about the bonds they make with their teammates that matters most.

When Shepard seniors Alexandria Alarcon and Emily Ramel think about what they want their last softball season to be about, it's not what their stats look like or hoisting a trophy at the end of the season that matters. What matters most to these girls is that their team creates a lasting bond.

"I hope that we can be more than just a team," Ramel said. "No drama or anything like that. I want us to be a big happy family."

Alarcon has been playing softball since she was in seventh grade. She tried playing football and basketball, but for her, softball's team atmosphere couldn't be matched.

"I love the competition," Alarcon said. "I'm just able to have fun with everyone out here."

Ramel is also a member of the Shepard swim team. She has been playing softball since fifth grade said she enjoys it but prefers swimming for one simple reason.

"I'm better at it (swimming), I feel," Ramel said.

Both Alarcon and Ramel are self-proclaimed "nerds." They said that in their free time they usually are busy doing homework.

All of those hours of studying have proved to be well worth it because when Alarcon graduates, she is planning on attending Lewis University. As for Ramel, she will spend her college career at St. Ambrose. She plans to go into physical therapy.
