Chicago Classic Brings College Volleyball To Mother McAuley

The 2012 Chicago Classic, women's college volleyball tournament, returns to Chicago's south side September 8th and 9th, announced Elite Volleyball Program organizer Therese Boyle Niego.

The 2012 Chicago Classic will once again play host to some of the nation’s premier lady’s volleyball programs at Mother McAuley High School. The two-day, four-team tournament is headlined by perennial powerhouse Penn State with Oregon State, DePaul and UIC all lining upfor the challenge of matching up against the Nittany Lions, five-time national champions.

“The Olympics helped spotlight the grace, beauty and power of women’s volleyball so this is aunique chance to see up close all that these athletes bring to the game,” said Niego. “We’ve worked hard to get the elite here and made the ticket prices affordable for families.”

Teams

Penn State – The Nittany Lions’ Head Coach Russ Rose is entering his 34th season at the helm ofthe 5-time National Champs who welcome back 6 starters from the 2011 squad.

Two former Nittany Lion women's volleyball team members have been named to the U.S. Women's NationalVolleyball Team's Olympic squad. Christa Harmotto (Hopewell Township, Pa.) and MeganHodge (Durham, N.C.) were nominated to the 12-player Olympic Games Team. In addition, Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) and Nicole Fawcett (Zanesfield, Ohio) are two of eight alternates.

Oregon State – Head Coach Taras Liskevych enters his 8th season on the bench for the Beaversas they look to build on an impressive 2011 season. The Beavers feature a Team USA member, Becky Defoe.

DePaul – The Blue Demons seek to improve upon their 2011 season this year under NadiaEdwards, who enters her third season at the helm. A talented crop of newcomers along withseveral returning starters look to make that happen.

UIC – The Flames are not only looking to knock off PSU, they’re looking to best local rival. DePaul for all-city bragging rights. UIC is coming off a fifth-place finish in the Horizon League last season. Kelsey Safranek along with Sara Sternard, were both named to the League's first-team. Head Coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley is heading into her fourth season on the Flames' bench.
