Boys Basketball: Stagg Comes Up Big in Third Quarter for Win No. 20

Stagg 49, Thornwood 39. A 20-point third quarter guarantees the Chargers a second-place finish in conference.

The Hot Read: Stagg erupted for a 20-point third quarter after being held to five in the second by Thornwood on Tuesday. The Chargers’ motion offense finally wore down the visiting T-Birds en route to a 49-39 win on Senior Night. 

Patch’s MVP: Chargers forward Darius Draper did a little of everything. He led all scorers with 12 points. He also picked up eight rebounds, five steals and three blocks. Four of his five steals came in the fourth quarter, helping seal the win for the Chargers against a surging Thornwood team. 

Key Stats: The Chargers outscored the T-Birds 31-17 in the second half, shooting 11-of-23 from the field and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe. The T-Birds shot 7-of-28 from the field and did not attempt a single free throw in the second half (they had two for the whole game).

Stagg’s Leaders: In addition to Draper: Dan Ahern and Scott Lyons (10 points each). 

Thornwood’s Leaders: Darell Combs (9 points, 5 rebounds), Johnte Shannon (9 points, all on three-pointers), Khapri Alston (6 points, 11 rebounds).

Quotable: Chargers coach John Daniels: “This (Thornwood) is the type of team we need to beat in regionals. It was a good win for this program.” 

Records: Stagg: 20-5, 10-3 in Southwest Suburban Red. Thornwood: 14-11, 9-4.

What’s Next: The Chargers close their regular season on Thursday on the road against Bradley-Bourbonnais. The T-Birds play a home game against Andrew on Friday to close their regular season.
