Athlete of the Week: Stagg's Fewkes Keeps His Cool

When the going got tough for Scott Fewkes, the Chargers pitcher toughened up and delivered an impressive performance.

Stagg pitcher Scott Fewkes had a rough beginning to Tuesday's game against Bradley, giving up three runs in the first inning. But he settled down after that, keeping his team in the game and allowing just one unearned run over the next seven innings.

He struck out four and allowed just four hits in eight innings, as

Stagg coach Matt O’Neill was impressed with how Fewkes kept his composure after the first inning.

"After the leadoff walk, he settled down and got the next two guys. They got to him on a bloop hit and ended up scoring three runs, but after that he settled down," O’Neill said.

"I just had to hit my spots better,” Fewkes said. “I also had to keep the curveball down. Once I did that, it was easy to settle in. I knew I had to pick my team up and throw strikes."

For his contributions to the team, Fewkes is recognized as Patch's Athlete of the Week.

Fewkes will be attending Prairie State University, studying education and playing baseball there next year. His brother, Sean, is also a member of the Stagg baseball team.
