Athlete of the Week: Messina Helps Team Illinois Win National Crown
Sandburg/Stagg co-op gymnast finishes fifth in the all-around at the national meet in Florida.
Alexa Messina has been a gymnastics standout for the Sandburg/Stagg co-op for the last three years. The junior gymnast recently helped Team Illinois win the national championship at the National High School Gymnastics Association Senior Showcase in Estero, Fla.
Messina finished fifth in the all-around competition, helping Team Illinois earn 149.625 points and finish ahead of Massachusetts and two-time defending champion New Jersey.
For her achievements, Messina is the Patch Athlete of the Week.
