At Stagg, Boys and Girls Make a Pitch to Strike Out Cancer

Chargers plan to stage charity doubleheader on May 7.

Stagg's baseball and softball programs are planning a doubleheader charity softball event on May 7.

In preparation of the event, members of the baseball and softball teams have been selling pink caps to raise money to donate to Relay For Life. Chargers softball coach Missy Mason is a cancer survior. Many surprises in store, and the Chargers will hold various pregame festivities.

But, before the Chargers try to strike out cancer, Lea LaSota will look to continue her strikeout work on the softball diamond. She helped the Chargers (15-0) improve their perfect record with an outstanding pitching performance against Homewood-Flossmoor. In Stagg's 3-1 win over the Vikings, LaSota allowed just one run on two hits.

While in baseball, the Chargers are having trouble scoring runs in bunches, as evident in a 7-3 to H-F earlier in the week.

Charger Soccer Hot and Cold

Stagg's offense went from 60-mph to zero in the past week. On Tuesday, the Chargers defeated Joliet Central 3-0 in girls soccer action on AnnMarie Gal's first-half hat trick, but the H-F defense was too much for the Chargers and held Stagg without even a shot on goal in a 2-0 loss on Thursday.

Shepard Baseball Struggles

Shepard dropped a pair of baseball games this week. The Astros were blanked by Argo on Tuesday, and they lost to Thornton Fractional South 7-3. Justin Madrigal was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and Matt Hoge was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored against T.F. South.

Water Polo Roundup

Both Stagg and Shepard have had excellent production in the pool from their boys water polo teams. The Astros dominated Argo 11-2 on Tuesday. They picked up four goals from both Mark Kelly and David Ramirez. Meanwhile, the Chargers had victories Tuesday and Thursday over Lincoln-Way North (12-7) and Andrew (15-10). Drew Stoffel scored nine goals in the two games. Juan Valdez had three goals in Stagg's win over the Phoenix.
