Midwest Wizard of Oz Festival writing contest accepting essays
The Midwest Wizard of Oz Festival, running September 19-21 in Orland Park, is holding a national essay contest for fifth grade through 12th grade writers. The 300-350 word essay should explain the writer's reasons for enjoying The Wizard of Oz and may include their favorite characters and scenes. The contest starts Thursday, May 15th and eligible entries must be postmarked by June 31st.
What does the winner receive? According to the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau press release, “The Grand Prize winner will attend a special VIP luncheon with their parents and Head Judge John Fricke, where the contest winners can get advice, direction and answers to their questions on a career in writing from Fricke. Fricke is a two-time Emmy Award winner as co-producer and co-writer of PBS-TV and A&E specials. He will be joined by prominent members of the International Wizard of Oz Club in judging the entrants.”
Essays will be divided into four grade levels, and awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each of the categories at the festival.
