A Christmas Carol: The Musical a family treat

When we were invited to A Christmas Carol: The Musical one of our daughters begged to attend. She really wanted to see the show. I really wanted to take her. The problem was the press opening was on a Sunday night -- or as we think about Sunday night, a school night.

We decided to let her attend with me, even though it meant she'd be out very late on a school night. A Christmas Carol: The Musical is described as "an endearing combination of a treasured tale and soaring music by a Disney musical genius." It's a great description of a wonderful show.

The Disney musical genius, composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin), infused the Charles Dickens holiday classic with music for the whole family. Theatre at the Center’s production is directed by Artistic Director William Pullinsi and stars five time Jeff-Award nominee Larry Adams as “Scrooge”.  Adams recently appeared in Oliver! at Drury Lane, Off-Broadway in the The Hunchback Variations, and was in the Broadway production and National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.

When the show was over, I looked at my watch. I was delighted to see that it was only a little after 9:00 p.m. From start to finish the show ran about two hours. For us this meant our daughter would be up a little bit later than usual, but would still get a good night's sleep before school the next day.

Our daughter loved the show. She was engaged from start to finish. After the show she commented on different scenes and laughed at things she found funny. She was so enthusiastic that her sister (who previously didn't show any interest), now wants to see the show.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical was a smash hit in New York for nearly 10 years, presented annually at Madison Square Garden every December from 1994 until 2003. I hope the Theatre at the Center has an equally successful run with the show. It really is a great way for a family to celebrate the holidays. A Christmas Carol: The Musical runs through December 22 at 1040 Ridge Road, Munster.

Theatre at the Center is located off I-80/94, just 35 minutes from downtown Chicago, and has free parking. It took us under 30 minutes to go from door to door. We arrived early so we could explore the gift store. We walked out of the store with Christmas presents for all the females on our Christmas list. The gift shop has adorable, handmade jewelry and other items at wonderful price points.

Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m.; Sundays at 2:30 p.m.; and select Thursday evening and Saturday matinees. Individual ticket prices range from $38 - $42. To purchase individual tickets call the Box Office at 219.836.3255 or Tickets.com at 800.511.1552.

Disclosure:  I did receive free press passes. My opinions are my own.
