Your Turn: Vote for Patch Athlete of the Week

Please helps us choose our Southland Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 17-24. The contenders: Dan Caddigan, Brother Rice; Nick Dangles, L-W West; Alec Melone, Sandburg; Adesuwa Osabuohein, Homewood-Flossmoor; Dena Waldier, L-W North; Ian Woodworth, Marist.

The nominees for Southland Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 17-24:

Dan Caddigan, senior, boys cross country, Brother Rice. Caddigan ripped off a time of 15:16 for 2.97 miles and placed first in the Class 3A Marist Regional at Midlothian Meadows Forest Preserve. He led the Crusaders to a second-place finish with a team total of 57 points, one back of regional champ Sandburg.

Nick Dangles, junior, football running back, Lincoln-Way West. Dangles rushed for 148 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns before leaving with an injury in the fourth quarter of the Warriors’ 28-20 victory over Bradley-Bourbonnais. His performance helped Lincoln-Way West gain a share of the Southwest Suburban Red Conference championship.

Alec Melone, senior, football running back, Sandburg. Melone, filling in for injured teammate Mike Rago, stepped up big in the Eagles’ 31-28 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor. Melone rushed for 140 yards on 17 carries. He scored on a 49-yard burst in the fourth quarter that showcased his ability to shift on the fly into another speed gear. He also finished with two catches for 24 yards.

Adesuwa Osabuohein, junior, girls tennis, Homewood-Flossmoor. Osabuohein won 3-of-4 matches in singles play at the IHSA girls state tournament. She finally was ousted in a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Hinsdale Central’s Alex Solovyer. Osabuohein’s strong play helped the Vikings tie for fifth in the final team standings with 16 points.

Dena Waldier, senior, girls cross country, Lincoln-Way North. Waldier was timed in 19:16 for 3.0 miles and won the individual championship in the Class 3A Andrew Regional at Turtle Head Lake Forest Preserve. She led the Phoenix to a fourth-place finish with 89 points.

Ian Woodworth, junior, football quarterback, Marist. Woodworth completed 35-of-45 for 557 yards and four touchdowns in the RedHawks’ 56-51 victory over Joliet Catholic Academy. He also rushed for one touchdown as Marist clinched a tie for first place in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.
