State Report Card Is In: See How Palos Schools Rank

The State of Illinois recently released its school report cards for every district and school in the state. Find out how test scores lined up in your local district.

This year's Illinois School Report Card was released last week, and the results are a mixed bag for Palos area schools — and schools throughout the state.

Of the schools ranked in the report card, 600 passed while 3,169 were "deemed failures," according to a Daily Herald analysis of the State Report Card.

This year, the state made a move to raise expectations — or cut scores — for the ISATs, which is given to third- through eighth-grade students. The move was meant to help "align with the more rigorous Common Core Learning Standards and give a better indication of college and career readiness," according to a Illinois State Board of Education press release.

District 118

Using the new performance metrics the district dropped one point form 83 to 82 percent of students meeting state standards on their composite reading and math scores. The state average is 59 percent. Last year, the old cut scores showed 95 percent of students meeting standards. However, when looking at the results of both years using this year's metrics the district only dropped one point.

This year D118 students scored 22 percentage points higher than the state average in reading and 24 points higher in mathematics. Using this year's standards, 83 percent of students met standards in math and 81 percent in reading.

Using the old cut score standards last year the district had a composite score of 94 percent, however when adjusted with the new standards the 2012 number was 77 percent.

Stagg High School

The state uses the PSAE test to determine high school progress. Stagg High School saw a five point jump in their composite scores on that test with 59 percent of students meeting standards this year, while in 2012 54 percent did. Historically, that is the highest number since 2010 when 60 percent of students hit the mark. The state average this year was 53 percent.

The school scored a 60 percent in reading, five points higher than the state average this year. Mathematics scores stood at 58 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards in 2013. That is a jump of five percentage points over last year. The state average was 52 percent.
