Stagg Baseball's Farnan Powers His Way Out of Slump

Junior Mike Farnan broke a 1-for-26 slump with a triple and a home run in the Chargers' 11-8 victory over Sandburg in summer league baseball.

Mike Farnan was called up to the Stagg varsity roster midway through the spring season. He has had a rough summer at the plate.

"Mike's been struggling this summer," Stagg coach Matt O'Neill said. "Going into (Thursday), he was 1-for-26. We talked about making adjustments. He had a great spring when we brought him up."

Farnan's adjustments paid large dividends in Stagg's 11-8 victory over Sandburg Thursday in the final regularly scheduled summer league game for both teams. Both teams begin play in the summer state tournament Monday or Tuesday in the Sandburg Regional.

The Chargers trailed the Eagles 8-7 going in to the top of the seventh inning. Farnan, the leadoff hitter, took a pitch, fell behind in the count and then tied the game in one swing. His solo home run sparked a four-run uprising for the Chargers.

Farnan earlier tripled and drove in a run. He also scored on a throwing error.

"It was an 0-2 pitch, and (Sandburg's pitcher) was throwing a good curveball," Farnan said. "I didn't know it was gone. I didn't even see (the home run) at first. I just want to help my team win any way I can."

Farnan, who plays in the outfield, has the potential to develop into a strong player for the Chargers in 2012. He just needs to learn to harness his power.
