Shepard Students Stand Tall for World War II Veterans

Members of the Alan B. Shepard High School ROTC program welcomed home World War II veterans returning from a day of honor in Washington, D.C.

Students in Shepard's ROTC program stood guard as over 70 veterans of World War II returned home to Midway Airport from Washington, D.C.

The trip was sponsored by Honor Flight Chicago. The organization brings World War II veterans to visit the nation's capital. The veterans visit the monuments and partake in a day of honor.

Major Dan Johnson oversees Shepard's ROTC program. He thought this was the perfect event for his students to participate in.

"It is a great way for us to start off the year," Johnson said. "It means a lot for them to be part of something bigger than themselves."

Adding to the excitement was the fact that one of the veterans making the trip was Palos Hills resident Lewis Pazoles. Pazoles' son Bill is a retired Eisenhower High School math teacher, who now tutors at Shepard.
