Mt. Assisi Students, Supporters Bid Farewell to Beloved School

An outpouring of love and appreciation for Mt. Assisi Academy Sunday, June 1.

Two weeks ago, the Mt. Assisi Academy Class of 2014 crossed the stage and grabbed their piece of history.

Their diplomas will be the last inked with the school's name, after officials decided in January to shutter the school at the end of the year. Students and alum rallied on social media to save their beloved school, but the efforts fell short. And just as they took to social media to save it, they turned to the Internet to share their love of the school during a final prayer and gathering at the school on Sunday, June 1.

Students praised the school for its influence in their lives. They came with former classmates, family members—others also impacted by the school and its staff. Together they meandered through the halls, stopping into classrooms to capture one last image sitting at desks in a school they used to call home.

Together, they mourned.

"Driving up the Mount Assisi hill one last time for the Thanksgiving liturgy before it officially closes for good," one supporter Tweeted.

Officials cited a steady decline in enrollment and increased financial strain as reason for the closing.

"Funny how such a small school has touched so many women!" one supporter wrote. "Mount Assisi you will be missed."
