Gimme 5: Shepard's Weatherspoon Focused on Football Right Now

Two-sport standout Martice Weatherspoon would like to continuing playing ball in college, but he's not sure what 'ball' will suit him best as he pursues a biology degree.

Martice Weatherspoon aspires to be a biology teacher when he graduates from college.

Weatherspoon, a wide receiver, safety and kick return specialist at Shepard, wants to use either football or basketball to help him get to that goal. He is a two-sport standout for the Astros.

Two sport athletes are rare at the collegiate level, and Weatherspoon will have an uphill battle trying to do both on top of carrying an intensive academic load. At the Division I level, college football has a few weeks left when college basketball opens up.

So, Weatherspoon likely will have to pick one or the other. He has not decided where he would like to attend school next year. Right now, he's looking forward to helping Shepard mount a title drive in the South Suburban Red football ranks.

The Astros, looking to reach the IHSA playoffs for the third straight year, open on Friday, Aug. 26, against Chicago Payton. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Lane Stadium.
