Fan Poll: Cast Your Vote for Patch Athlete of the Week

Give us a hand and pick our Southland Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 10-16. The contenders: Lexi Chionis, Ashley Holder, Tyler Hook, Sheldon Jones, Jimmy McClinton and Ryan Utter.

Vote for one of the following (or write in your own candidate and explain your reasoning in the comments section):

Lexi Chionis, junior, girls tennis, Chicago Christian. Chionis won four matches without losing a set and captured the No. 1 singles title at the Stagg Sectional. She defeated her sister, Lisa, a freshman, in the final 6-4, 1-2 (retired). Both girls advance to the IHSA state tournament Thursday-Saturday at Mt. Prospect.

Ashley Holder, senior, girls volleyball, Marist. Holder delivered 31 assists, 18 digs and seven service points, including one ace, in the RedHawks’ 20-25, 25-21, 25-13 victory over York. Her leadership has helped Marist build a 24-5 record heading into Tuesday night’s match at Joliet Catholic Academy.

Tyler Hook, senior, football quarterback, Andrew. Hook completed 19 of 24 for 254 yards and four touchdowns in the Thunderbolts’ 36-14 victory over Lincoln-Way North. At one point in the first half, he connected on 11 straight passes. The win for Andrew was its fourth straight and fifth in six games and kept the T-Bolts in a position to claim the Southwest Suburban Red Conference crown.

Sheldon Jones, senior, football safety, Homewood-Flossmoor. Jones scored three touchdowns three different ways in H-F’s 56-19 victory over Joliet West, one on a run, one on a catch and one on an interception return. He also picked up a third-quarter fumble and raced 69 yards before he was stopped short of a fourth score in a memorable Senior Night performance.

Jimmy McClinton, senior, football quarterback, Shepard. McClinton accounted for four touchdowns in Shepard’s 38-20 victory over Evergreen Park. He threw three TD passes, two of them to Londell Lee, and ran 24 yards for another TD as the Astros evened their record at 4-4 and kept their IHSA state playoff hopes alive.

Ryan Utter, senior, boys golf, Providence Catholic. Utter shot rounds of 75 and 77 for a two-day, 36-hole total of 152, good for a tie for fourth place in the Class 3A boys state golf tournament at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington. Utter’s steady play under the trying conditions of high winds led Providence to a ninth-place finish.
