D230 to Spend Nearly $2 Million Cooling High School Gyms

Consolidated High School District 230 will begin work in June on air conditioning units in its high school's gyms, hoping they get more use during the warmer months than they do now.

Many area students will soon be getting a break from the heat thanks to a $1.9 million plan add air conditioning systems in school gyms.

Officials from approved the deal at a recent meeting, when they said some grade schools have stopped using the district's high schools for graduation ceremonies due to the hot temps, according to a Triblocal story.

“Maybe if we have air conditioning, they will come back,” board member Kathy Quilty said in the story.

Some districts, including , have opted beat the heat by holding summertime ceremonies in the or at area community colleges.

Crews will begin adding systems in gymnasiums at Sandburg, Stagg and  after school gets out in June. The project will be led by Alsip's Amber Mechanical Contractors, Triblocal reports.
