Worth GOP Committeeman Will Take on Cunningham for State Senate

Shaun Murphy, a name well known in local GOP circles, will challenge Democrat Bill Cunningham in the Illinois State Senate's 18th District.


Shaun Murphy, of Evergreen Park, announced his candidacy for State Senate in Illinois’ 18th District. Murphy will be challenging incumbent State Senator Bill Cunningham (D – Chicago) in the November election.

Murphy, a local certified public accountant currently serves as the vice president of the Evergreen Park Community High School District 231 school board and as the Worth Township Republican Committeeman. Friends and campaign volunteers collected over 2,200 signatures from local registered voters over a three-week period prior to filing.

“I look forward to providing a real choice for the voters on the November ballot and a healthy debate of the issues affecting our local community and Springfield throughout the campaign,” Murphy said in his announcement.  “My campaign will focus on the issues that matter most to our community: job creation, lower taxes, term limits and responsible government spending.”

Murphy believes his background as a forensic certified public accountant and a former small business owner provides him with the skills necessary to attack the budget issues confronting the state.

“The status quo of one party rule in Springfield is simply not working,” the GOP candidate said. “I hope to provide a competent, independent voice to Springfield that properly represents the Southwest Side and suburbs of Chicago.”

The 18th Legislative District includes sections of Orland, Worth, and Palos Townships in the Southwest Cook County suburbs and the neighborhoods of Mount Greenwood, Beverly, Morgan Park and Auburn-Gresham in Chicago.
