The Rundown: Palos Hills City Council Meeting

An overview of what happened at the Sept. 2 City Council meeting.

The Main Story: Council members voted 9-0 (Alderman Joan Knox, 1st Ward, was absent) to award a contract to De Vries Roofing Company to install a new roof on the police station.

Palos Hills Police Chief Paul J. Madigan solicited bids from three companies for the project. One did not reply, and of the other two, De Vries came in with the lower bid at $37,750. Funding for the project will come from the city's Federal Asset Sharing fund. It will be the first time the station has had a new roof since it was constructed over 35 years ago.

Other votes: The Council voted 8-1 to approve a special use permit for a drive-thru restaurant at 10348 South Harlem Avenue. Alderman Pauline Stratton (2nd Ward) cast the nay vote. The council had been discussing parking concerns about the business for the last few weeks.

The Quote: Alderman Frank Williams (5th Ward) informed residents that District 230 is going to issue $7 million in bonds for safety repairs at Stagg and Andrew high schools. Williams said although he usually supports the district, he is irritated that money was spent to install artificial turf at the two high schools this summer and now the district is looking to issue bonds for needed repairs. The district will hold a meeting on Sept. 30 at Andrew High School to further discuss the measure.

"Residents should attend and post their feelings about it," Williams said.
