The Rundown: Palos Hills City Council Commends Snow Cleanup, Approves Liquor Ordinance

Council members expressed much gratitude toward public works for cleanup efforts following the blizzard.

Snow Removal: Mayor Gerald Bennett said at the Feb. 3 City Council meeting that he believed public works did an excellent job of snow removal during Tuesday's blizzard.

He said the city delivered a reverse 911 call to residents urging them to stay indoors and off of the streets, and also informing that trash pickup would be delayed on Wednesday.

“I want to thank our residents for complying with that call and helping to make cleanup easier,” Bennett said.

The mayor also said that public works had a vehicle making the rounds in order to clear the plow wall from the driveways of residents who had to leave their homes for emergency reasons.

A number of council members said they received few phone calls from residents, and those they did receive was almost all positive.

Liquor Ordinance: The Council officially adopted an amendment to its liquor ordinance allowing Palos Mart to sell packaged liquor until 2 a.m. The council the issue at the past three meetings.

State Rep Drops In: Bill Cunningham, the newly elected State Representative for the 35th district, addressed the Palos Hills City Council during public comment. Cunningham said he was “eager and excited to get started and begin working” with aldermen in Palos Hills.

The 35th District covers most of Palos Hills.

Ald. Joan Knox told Cunningham that she heard very positive things about him and looked forward to his representation in Springfield.

Upcoming Meetings: The Plan Commission will meet on Feb. 7 regarding a special use permit for a proposed daycare center at 110th and Roberts Road.

The Liquor Commission hearing regarding Red Velvet Lounge that was scheduled for 6 p.m., Feb. 14 will be moved to a later date. The lounge was recently cited for selling alcohol to minors. Bennett said representatives from the lounge have obtained an attorney and asked for a continuance.
