The Rundown: A New Community Garden and Fire Pit Ordinance Are Both Possibilities in Palos Hills

A look at what happened at the Nov. 4 Palos Hills City Council Meeting

The Main Story: A brief City Council meeting on Thursday, Nov. 4, foreshadowed what is likely to be a lengthier committee meeting next week. A new fire pit ordinance and the possibility of a community garden will both be topics of discussion.

Resident Ronald Glocker addressed aldermen during public comment and expressed his concern over a "rumor that he had heard," about the city banning fire pits.

Ald. Ricky Moore (4th Ward) expressed some frustration that there were still residents under the impression that the council was looking to ban fire pits. Moore assured Glocker otherwise, saying, "if they ban fire pits, my house will be for sale."

Aldermen Pauline Stratton (2nd Ward), Frank Williams (5th Ward), and A.J. Pasek (3rd Ward) all expressed dissatisfaction with changing the ordinance, but agreed discussion could continue at the next committee meeting.

New Garden:  Ald. Bill Hanson (3rd Ward) announced that he would like to open a discussion at the next committee meeting on starting a community garden in Palos Hills. Hanson said he has some land in mind and believes it would be a positive addition to the community. He asked that residents who may be interested in volunteering or helping to plan the garden let the Council know.

Williams suggested that the harvest could possibly be donated to local area shelters or other services that help the less fortunate, and said he thought it was an excellent idea.

From the 5th ward: The Council passed a motion by Williams to close Possum Drive, the same street Williams lives on, to through traffic. The street will now only be open to residential traffic and signs saying as much will be posted.

Williams said residents on the street have complained that college students from , which is located nearby, use Possum Drive to avoid long lights at the 111th Street intersection.

"They drive straight into the area and then turn around in residents driveways and have damaged a fence," Williams said.

The Palos Hills City Council will hold a committee meeting next week at 7 pm.
