Stop Signs Coming to 69th and 122nd in Palos Heights

The Palos Heights City Council voted in favor of putting in two-way stop signs on 69th Avenue at 122nd Street, though one alderman was against the measure.

Additional stop signs and a traffic study will soon be coming to a Palos Heights street.

The Palos Heights City Council voted Tuesday in favor of two-way stop signs on 69th Avenue at 122nd Street to control north and south traffic in that area. The intersection was the scene of a rollover accident on April 30, and the location has apparently been affected by other accidents.

Alderman Jack Clifford said Tuesday night that there have been “numerous complaints” about safety at that intersection, and with it being on a bus route, a school bus had blocked a fire engine’s path after the April 30 accident.

“A study was done and it was based on the report,” Clifford said, about why the stop signs would be installed.

Alderman Dolores Kramarski was the single vote against adding the stop signs. She said after the meeting that the area already has too many stop signs, and their abundance leads to people ignoring them.

“I don’t think the stop signs are effective,” she said. “It lulls people into a false sense of security.”

The council unanimously voted in favor of trimming trees in the city’s right-of-way, and a $3,000 traffic study for 122nd Street between Harlem and Oak Park avenues. The original motion for the traffic study requested a $1,500 study, though Kramarski pointed out during the meeting that a single street corner would cost $750 to study, and $1,500 might not cover the whole requested area.

The council also was scheduled to vote on giving the city attorney a green light to start drafting sample laws about allowing video gambling in Palos Heights restaurants. That vote was held until after a committee of the whole meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11.
