Palos Heights Aldermen Sworn In

Four Palos Heights alderman, including one newcomer, took the oath of office at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Four alderman raised their right hands and took the oath of office Tuesday night at the Palos Heights City Council meeting.

Aldermen Michael McGrogan, Alan Fulkerson, Bob Basso and Jeffrey Key were all sworn in by municipal district judges.

Key is the only newcomer of the bunch. 10-year incumbent Jean Gnap in April's election.

Several aldermen offered their reflections on Gnap's career in the council.

With his voice cracking with emotion, McGrogan said he admired Gnap for the courage of her convictions.

"I saw Jean support the city's position on Westgate," McGrogan said. "Jean's position wasn't very popular, especially in that area. Jean never wavered. If there was ever a doubt in my mind as to someone admire, I believe her position on this issue speaks volumes about her character."

Key's campaign took hold after residents of varying subdivisions within the Westgate Valley development demanded the city dedicate and maintain their streets.

The homeowners associations have been locked in a lawsuit with Palos Heights since 2008. (To read a detailed description of .)

Mayor Bob Straz presented Gnap a plaque commemorating her decade of service. After Straz was elected in 2001, and several aldermen resigned, he recommended that Gnap serve as an aldermen because, "she had the pulse of the city in her heart."

Key addressed the Council and audience and offered praise for Gnap's service.

"I am humbled and honored to be sworn in as alderman," Key said. "I want you to know that I do not take this opportunity lightly, and I will use all my abilities to be diligent in my duties and responsibilities."

Key will chair the Public Safety Committee, and sit on the Recreation, Roads and Construction and Planning and Zoning committees.
