Palos Heights Rec Center Revamp Headed to Referendum

Aldermen this week decided to move forward with an ordinance to go to referendum on whether the city should issue general obligation bonds to pay for a new rec center.

A proposed $6.3 million overhaul to the Palos Heights Recreation Center will most likely be up to the voters, after aldermen voted Tuesday to draft an ordinance to put a referendum on the ballot.

With voters' approval, the city would issue general obligation bonds to fund the project. Property taxes would go up by about $2 per homeowner for the 20-year lifespan of the bonds.

The draft ordinance will go before the board on July 15. The referendum would be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot.

Renovations would include a multipurpose/banquet room with an instructional kitchen in place of the current gym, space for a teen center, a pre-school area and multi-purpose community rooms and extra parking. The new recreation space, located adjacent to the existing building, will include a multipurpose gym, locker rooms and restrooms on the lower level. On the upper level, there would be a three-lane walking/jogging track, a wellness center with exercise equipment and a lounge.
