Alsip Continues Planning Project

Alsip is creating a comprehensive plan that will serve as a  roadmap for sustainable economic and physical growth over the next two decades.  The Alsip Comprehensive Plan will outline recommendations to address issues related to land use, natural resources, housing, transportation, economic development, and community character. As part of this effort, the Village would like to invite local residents, business owners, and community leaders to attend a community meeting: the Comprehensive Plan Visioning Workshop.

The Visioning Workshop will be the second public meeting of the comprehensive planning process and is designed to build on the initial efforts by gathering ideas that ensure that community values and assets are preserved into the future. This interactive meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2012, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Alsip Village Hall, 4500 W. 123rd Street, Alsip, Illinois 60803. Sign-in for the event will begin at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.

In the plan’s first phase of development, an existing conditions analysis was carried out to examine communitywide issues and opportunities related to land use, economic development, housing, parks and open space, and community infrastructure.  The kick-off public meeting to identify the community’s issues and concerns was held on April 12, 2012.   The second phase of planning will be kicked off at the August 1 meeting and will involve the public in creating a shared vision for the future of Alsip with specific goals and strategies to help achieve the desired vision.  Based on all the information collected in the first two phases, the third phase of planning will involve the creation of the Comprehensive Plan document itself with input from the public and Village officials. An open house will be held to present the draft Comprehensive Plan to the community.

HUD and CMAP build capacity for local planning

CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Sustainable Communities Regional Planning grant, is helping 70 local governments, nonprofits, and intergovernmental organizations to address local issues at the intersection of transportation, land use, and housing, including the natural environment, economic growth, and community development. In response to the LTA Year One call for projects, CMAP received over 220 proposals from more than 130 applicants.  Current projects include local comprehensive plans and more-specialized ones for housing, water, transit oriented redevelopment, and overall sustainability.  Year Two proposals are due August 1, 2012.
