Cause of Fuel Leak Remains Under Investigation

Manhattan and Orland Hills lent support to the operation in Palos Park.

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is conducting the investigation into the cause of a jet fuel pipeline leak along Cal Sag Road.

Units from Manhattan and Orland Hills lent support to on Wednesday during the cleanup operation, officials said.

Cal Sag is expected remained closed from Route 7 to Route 45 until sometime Friday. Roads near the site, located west of the intersection of South Highwood Drive and Route 83, also are closed.

The Cal-Sag Channel reopened earlier this week after the U.S. Coast Guard determined the waterway was safe to use.

The Badger Pipeline System transports gasoline, diesel and jet fuels throughout the region. A section of the pipeline near Cal Sag Road (Route 83) in Palos Park began to leak at about 2:40 a.m. on Monday. Officials said an automatic shutoff system stopped the leak within one minute.

Village of Palos Park officials are working closely with the Coast Guard, U.S. and Illinois environment protection agencies and other officials as the site is cleaned up. U.S. EPA officials are overseeing operations.

West Shore Pipe Line Company owns the Badger Pipeline System. The following information has been provided by the company regarding issues from the public:

  • West Shore Pipe Line has established a claims center hotline for anyone who believes they have been affected by the spill. Individuals can contact the claims center between 7 AM and 7 PM CT using the hotline at 866-837-5016.
  • West Shore Pipe Line Company has launched a public website with information about the Palos Park, IL release, the company’s ongoing remediation efforts and important contact information: www.badgerpipelineresponse.com
