Scam Targets Palos Man with Promise of Federal Grant Money
An area man was told he would get $9,000 in federal cash if he bought a Walmart gift card and wired money, police said.
A Palos-area man fell victim to a scammer on the telephone promising federal grant money, police said.
The victim received a call from a stranger claiming he had qualified for a $9,200 federal grant, Palos Hills police said.
All the Palos Hills man had to do was buy $350 gift card from Walmart and give him the number to the caller.
Police said the victim did as instructed and then got another phone call claiming $628 needed to be wired in order to finally secure the grant money. He skipped on making the wire transfer and, instead, called police on Sept. 4.
No arrests were reported.
