Police Cracking Down on Those Who Party Too Hardy Over Labor Day

A "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over/Click It or Ticket" starts today and will continue through Sept. 3.

Police are stepping up their enforcement of drunk driving and seat belt laws over the Labor Day holiday.

Commissioner Dan Polk has announced plans for a “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over/Click It or Ticket” crackdown during nighttime hours starting tonight and running through Sept. 3.

The enforcement is designed to target impaired drivers and those driving without seat belts. A disproportionate number of deaths from crash involve alcohol and motorists who hadn't buckled up, Polk said.

Midnight to 3 a.m. is the deadliest time on Illinois roads, according to data from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Polk recommends those looking to have fun to select a designated driver and not let friends or family drive drunk.

More tips from Palos Park:

  • Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver before going out and give that person your keys.
  • If you are impaired, call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.
  • Use your community’s designated driver program.
  • Promptly report impaired drivers you see on the roadways to law enforcement.
  • Wear your seat belt and make sure all passengers are buckled up. It is your best defense against an impaired driver.
